DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

Lesson 1 - Getting Started - This lesson talks about the properties of watercolor and gouache, and how the paints will be used in this course. I provide information about other required materials such as papers, brushes, palettes, etc. I demonstrate setup of my studio space with my materials, and do a quick study illustrating how to apply and handle the paints.

Lesson 2 - Shaping Up - This lesson provides education about how to simplify and break a composition down into shapes, and then how to depict the size, arrangement and value of objects to create a strong painting. We apply these concepts to a simple landscape in two-tone (black and white).

Lesson 3 - A World in Color - This lesson covers color. We’ll discuss hue, saturation and value. The focus is on translating colour theory into practical knowledge for landscape painting. I introduce my limited palette and do a demo of a city park on a sunny day.

Lesson 4 - Taking it on the Road…and Some Tips and Tricks - This lesson discusses the pros and cons of painting inside and outside. I share tips and tricks, including my portable setup for painting outside, how to best work from photographs, how to choose a landscape to paint, and my uses for additional specific paints. I end with a painting of a hilly landscape on an overcast day.
