How Would You Feel Painting Your Favorite Vacation Spot with No Pressure?  Are you Ready to Learn How to Easily Add Vibrancy to Your Landscapes?

Join LYNN DAVIES in POCKET LANDSCAPES, introductory course to teach you the basics of quickly capturing small landscapes, with watercolor and gouache paints. You’ll learn the fundamental tools and skills to paint your surroundings or favorite vacation spot with no pressure. The focus is not to produce a ‘perfect’ painting but to create a vibrant scene with little fuss, good or bad, and then move on to the next painting. You’ll see your abilities grow through repetition and having fun.

By the end of this course students will have an understanding of the following concepts:

  • Understand properties and uses of gouache and watercolor paint
  • Create a small, portable painting setup with appropriate materials
  • Identify ‘paintable’ landscapes
  • Learn basics of landscape composition
  • Practice use of color, value and temperature
  • Try my tips and tricks

Lesson 1 - Getting Started - This lesson talks about the properties of watercolor and gouache, and how the paints will be used in this course. I provide information about other required materials such as papers, brushes, palettes, etc. I demonstrate setup of my studio space with my materials, and do a quick study illustrating how to apply and handle the paints.

Lesson 2 - Shaping Up - This lesson provides education about how to simplify and break a composition down into shapes, and then how to depict the size, arrangement and value of objects to create a strong painting. We apply these concepts to a simple landscape in two-tone (black and white).

Lesson 3 - A World in Color - This lesson covers color. We’ll discuss hue, saturation and value. The focus is on translating colour theory into practical knowledge for landscape painting. I introduce my limited palette and do a demo of a city park on a sunny day.

Lesson 4 - Taking it on the Road…and Some Tips and Tricks - This lesson discusses the pros and cons of painting inside and outside. I share tips and tricks, including my portable setup for painting outside, how to best work from photographs, how to choose a landscape to paint, and my uses for additional specific paints. I end with a painting of a hilly landscape on an overcast day.
