DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

As we start this course, it's essential to clearly define what we aim to achieve. We'll explore the "sight-size" drawing method, beginning indoors to master the fundamentals in a controlled environment. At first glance, the technique may seem deceptively simple. However, applying it outdoors introduces new challenges due to variables like unpredictable lighting, ambient noise, and natural movements. As you incorporate "sight-size" into your artistic practice, you'll discover its effectiveness and how it revolutionizes the way you view and depict your surroundings in both drawing and painting.

After I teach you the "Sight-Size method, you will watch as I stroll through old town Tustin and paint my surroundings.  We will paint part of a church, a steeple from a building, the top of an old home, a couple of trees, a rose and more!  I tried to show you a variety of ways to pull interesting scenes from different places.

Once you are familiar with the Sight-Size method and have watched me practice its basic principles, you're ready to take the next exciting step: incorporating color! Feel free to explore your surroundings, whether you're pressed for time and prefer to stay close to home, or you're adventurous with time to spare. You can easily use this method right in your living room or front yard. If you're up for a little adventure, why not head into town and capture an eclectic downtown scene, relax in a park, wander along the beach, or even sketch from your car in a shopping center parking lot—the possibilities are endless!

Grab your paper, start by transferring shapes with paintbrush, and then begin adding broad swaths of color, gradually working towards the finer details. Remember, repetition is key: the more you practice, the more skilled you'll become, and with skill comes mastery. Let's bring your environments to life with color and creativity!

MEET COLBY A. SANFORD - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR

Colby A. Sanford is a figurative realist painter with a heart for finding poetry in the prosaic. Growing up in an unconventional home, he was encouraged to paint on the walls of his bedroom and later lived in a yurt. His most precious moments are spent at home with his wife and two daughters, often baking oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Working in a restricted acrylic paint palette, Sanford is able to highlight beauty in the mundane. Many works are paired with short-form poetry that serves to further parse extraordinaries from the commonplace of everyday life.

COURSE SUPPLIES

Below is a list of the supplies that I will be using for the projects in this course.  However, you are always encouraged to use what you have on hand. 

Substrate

Paint

Brushes

  • Flat brushes in sizes 8, 12 and 1/2”
  • Round brushes in sizes 3 and 5)

Miscellaneous

  • Spray or spritzer bottle
  • Paper Towel
  • Some sort of travel paint kit.  I use a plastic box with a few small jars of paint and a square wood board for my palette.
