Are you tired of searching Pinterest for inspiration for your artwork? Would you like to learn how to create interesting portraits from your own photographs?
Join Kara in this two-day workshop where you will discover how to take your ordinary photographs taken with your phone into powerful, bold portraits. Kara has been painting portraits for the past five years, but when she began taking her own photographs, she truly understood how she could be in charge of every piece of her painting, from the very beginning. She is excited to share this process with you!
In this workshop the following concepts will be covered:
- Setting the stage for taking your own photograph.
- Deciding what pictures to take.
- Using the app Enlight to manipulate your photographs.
- Using shape and line to guide your portraits.
- Choosing colors for wash and underpainting.
- Using an underpainting as a map to guide your portrait.
- Mixing paints to match colors in photos.
- Layering fluid paints to create the layered effects in Kara's portraits.
- Adding details for drama
Workshop Schedule:
Wednesday, Day 1:
- 9:00 – 3:30 - Workshop
- We will begin by working with our photo references. Students should come prepared with one or two images that he/she would like to work on.
- Once photos have been manipulated and edited, Kara will demo her process, step-by-step, to help students follow along.
- Time will be spent looking at shape, and mixing color.
- Students will begin the under painting of their portrait.
- Kara will circulate through the group guiding as needed with composition, proportion, color, etc.
Thursday, Day 2:
- 9:00 – 3:30 - Workshop
- The second day will be devoted to adding color to portraits. Kara Will begin the morning by demonstrating how she layers her paints to create depth and interest in her pieces. The afternoon will be devoted to students adding color to their portraits
- Time will be spent looking at shape, and mixing color. Students will spend much of day 2 working on mixing colors.
- Kara will circulate through the group guiding as needed with composition, proportion, color, etc.
- The second day will be devoted to adding color to portraits. Kara Will begin the morning by demonstrating how she layers her paints to create depth and interest in her pieces. The afternoon will be devoted to students adding color to their portraits
Friday, Day 3:
- 9:00 – 3:30 - Workshop
- The third day will be devoted to finishing up portraits.
- Kara will circulate through the group guiding as needed with proportion, color, etc.

- iPhone or iPad - if you don't have one but want to take the class, Kara can share
- Enlight app - only available for Apple products

- Canvas - 16x20 or larger
- Variety of brushes - I only use bright brushes sizes 2, 8, 12, 16, and 20 (I use Blick Bright Whites)

If you are flying in, the closest airport to the studio is Santa Ana - John Wayne Airport. It is about 5 miles away from the studio, with several hotels nearby as well. Our clients' favorite hotels are listed below.
***there are hotels closer to the studio, but several that I DO NOT recommend. If you have questions about hotels, please reach out to me at karabullockart@gmail.com.
Workshop Policies: Due to limited class size, payment is non-refundable, but is transferable ONLY if the workshop sells out. If you purchase a workshop and are unable to attend, AND if there is a wait list for the course, we will offer your spot to a person on the wait list. If someone on the wait list is able to take your spot, we will reimburse you your tuition, minus a $75 admin fee for handling the replacement. If you are unable to attend the workshop, and the workshop has not sold out with a wait list, we will not be able to refund your purchase.
