Join Kathy Lewis, aka KJ Allison in LITTLE BOWL OF BEINGS! The focus of this course is to learn how to create clay faces using varied techniques with air dry clay. Throughout our lessons we will experience techniques such as using molds, creating faces inspired by other artists' work, and even giving clay faces a "face-lift"! There is peace and a joy that I experience when working with clay. DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS
This course consists of five main lessons, where you will learn how to create five different clay faces! The first lesson will show you how I create a face from a mold! I love to use molds, and there are many different affordable molds available to you! You will learn how to take a molded face and change it! I will also show you how to create a face from a hemisphere. Learn how to alter this shape to make a charming character. Painting it will reveal a wonderful personality! We will let loose and create a wildly wonderful distorted sculpted face. Eyes can be of different sizes, ears can be huge (or only ONE), exaggerate the size of the mouth, and more. Use a unique color palette. Don't forget, I will also show you how to give your clay face a "face-lift"! I can't wait for this! This course is full of fun and varied techniques on sculpting and painting faces so that you can create your very own, unique BOWL OF BEINGS!
MEET KATHY LEWIS - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR
I began taking online art classes, met Kara Strachan Bullock, and took almost all of the workshops she hosted at her local studio. I was in heaven to have this new friend and later her wonderful studio located less than 20 minutes from home! I also continued online courses and one had a particularly awesome affect on my art journey. It was taught by Jeanne-Marie Webb called "the soulbearers". I would never in a million years have expected to fall in love with sculpting clay! When working with clay I felt peace and joy unlike anything ever before experienced. I have not put it down in four years and continue to find great pleasure in creating with clay. It is my 'go to' art medium. I create purely from the heart having had no formal sculpting education and somehow I am afraid to pursue the art of sculpting in a formal way because I am afraid it would ruin the freedom with which I create. I hope to spread the joy of creating in clay, something that young and old, beginner and experienced can enjoy. I hope you can experience the feeling i heard in my granddaughter's comment recently when she said, "Grandma, I am so happy making this (clay sculpture). It is the most wonderful thing I have ever made."

COURSE SUPPLIES
Below is a list of the supplies that I will be using for the projects in this course. This list may appear long but you will have most of the items around the house and will only need to order a few things.
Clay
- Jovi Air Dry Clay in White or Gray (not red!)
Tools
Paint
- Permanent (waterproof) fine liner in size 0.2 or 0.5 or similar. I use UniPen but there are many other good brands
- Paint, any acrylic paint you like. I use golden in these colors:
- Titanium White
- Titan Buff
- Red Oxide,
- Raw Umber,
- Payne’s Gray,
- Yellow Oxide or Yellow Ochre,
- Iridescent Bronze (fine),
- Mars Yellow
- Black
- I am using shading gray (Golden High Flow Acrylic) a lot lately!
***Your paint can be heavy body or fluid but be sure you at least have white and black in fluid. A new color that I seem to use in EVERYTHING is Matisse Australian Ghost Gum, and I am also loving Jo Sonja’s olive and vermillion. These are the colors I am using but you do not need to get them all. Just use what you have.
Paint Brushes:
- Paint Brushes - Blick Scholastic brushes are cheap and work well, include detail and mid size. Here are some I like:
- Bright size 8
- Round size1
- You might want a teeny brush (size 0).
Other Supplies:
- Stabilo All Colored Marking Pencils in asst. colors. Especially blue and red. I like orange too.
- Small piece of sand paper ( 220 or 330 grit)
- A few round tooth picks
- Paper towels and/or baby wipes
- Wax Paper
- 2 large size zip lock bags
- Small fine mist sprayer for water
- Rubber gloves, the thin type if you can wear them
- Rolling pin or craft roller for clay or brayer roller
- xacto knife with blade
- Rubber gloves, the thin type if you can wear them
- Dust mask (recommended for sanding)
- Face molds (I use this one)
- Another good source for face molds is www.artoftwoms.com
- Winsor & Newton professional spray varnish
Optional: if you would like to collage papers on the faces you will want a little light weight paper as in book pages, tissue or napkins and some matte medium to glue to the clay (also seals it).
