DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS
Like stretching before you exercise it is helpful to warm up your right brain and calm the left. Through a process of organic and meditative gestures we will generate a set of simple sketches and doodles. With no particular set of rules to intimidate you - basic compositions will organically form to which you can choose to refine or elaborate upon or, take directly to the next step of assigning the overlapping shapes a value as both sides of your brain are work together attempting a balance between structure and spontaneity.
In addition to material cost being more reasonable, like all acts of repurposing, reusing printed canvases helps to conserve resources and reduce the environmental impact from manufacturing new products. In this lesson we will explore each essential step to properly picking and preparing a previously owned printed canvas for any project. Say that five times fast!
Once you’ve chosen your favorite design, from your series of sketches and doodles, and painted your background onto your chosen repurposed surface you are ready to draw your design onto your canvas. In this lesson I will show you a few tips and tricks I use to transfer my lines and shapes to my canvas. Through the deliberate marks using palette knife techniques we will explore how texture creates contrast through the interplay of light and shadow. In turn this lends a sense of realism to your abstract shapes that invites the viewer into the physicality of your piece, creating a tangible connection that transcends mere visual appreciation.
Next, we will move onto creating a diptych! Using the same design from the first project this lesson will go over steps to edit your lines and shapes to help you transfer your design to two canvases, creating a diptych. The interplay and dialogue between the two halves adds an extra layer to the composition and intensifies the overall aesthetic experience, stimulating a deeper engagement and contemplation for the viewer.
Once you’ve taken steps to edit your lines and shapes you are ready to draw your design onto your canvas. I will show you a few tips and tricks I use to transfer my lines and shapes to two canvases ensuring the visual elements and overall impact are cohesive particularly as the shapes extend across the two canvases and around each edge of the wrapped frames. This may involve refining details for visual balance as a viewer takes in the piece from different angles.

MEET NOEL VOGT - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR
Forever dreaming of living her life as an artist, so-cal native noel vogt has explored a handful of creative disciplines over her lifetime. With one foot still in the corporate world as a freelance graphic designer her current passion is rendering her thoughts and ideas as minimalist abstracts within an austere palette of black and white paints, pens and pixels. Noel’s current designs are derived from a plethora of neurographic sketches and doodles she’s created in recent years but have essentially been experimenting with all her life. With a focus on elements of texture, form and pattern, attempted through a reductionist process, Noel’s hope is that her art simply and purely conveys an immediate visual response of balance and harmony. When she’s not creating, you may find her walking her boxer or watching her family do their favorite things.
