Description
Would You Like to Create a Series of Paintings that Can Hang on the Wall as One Giant Painting?
Join Emma Petitt in her course IN THE SHALLOW END. In this course you will learn to create layers of interest, color, texture, and pattern, instead of learning anatomy rules. We are going to learn about observation! Figure drawing like mine is all about observation. In this course you will be encouraged to step away from reference images, and move more into using reference as inspiration! We will learn to move away from the reference image, change everything, to allow you the freedom to think for yourself! Stop feeling frustrated that your painting doesn't look like the reference, and feel excited and liberated to know that you can go your own way!
COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of this course students will have an understanding of the following concepts:
- Create a series of paintings that create one giant artwork
- Use gestural mark making and continuous line
- Paint with unconventional skin tones and bold colour combinations
- Discover how to find the shapes, planes and angles of the figure
- Build layers of colour, and create strong and unusual underpainting
- Learn how figures interact
- Play with distortion, large hands, small head, etc.

DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS
This course is not only about creating four large paintings, but we will be creating four paintings that can stand alone, or as one giant piece of artwork. We will being this class by creating layered underpaintings on our four canvases. We will do this all at once so that we learn how to get similarity in colour and pattern. We will use a variety of paint colors and tools, including brushes, brayers, stencils, and more!
Next we will move on to the drawings. You will learn ideas to give the four separate canvases a cohesion to work as one image. This is how they are able to stand alone or as one giant piece. Next we will move into looking at different poses, using reference images as a guide, and then create our own figures inspired by those images.
Finally, we will move into the painting part. Follow along as I show you from start to finish, how I paint each one of these figures. We will start by blocking on the figure, working loosely, but keeping some of the line work. This creates interest! You will also learn about the paint colors that I use along with how I mix them. I will share with you when to use larger brushes, and when to use smaller. You will also learn how to come back in after we are done painting to add some interesting marks. There are so many ways to create and make this your own.

MEET EMMA PETITT - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR
I paint curvy, fun and larger than life women. I love to distort and exaggerate the figure, especially the hands and feet. I use layers of colour and texture to build up interest and depth within the underpainting. I abstract the figure but still retaining an element of realism. And I paint large! i fill the substrate right up to the edges, often having the figure actually interact with the edges.

Emma’s classes are among my very favorite! She breaks down the process in such an easy to connect with way and she makes learning fun and relaxed. Whenever I taken one of her classes, I feel as though I’m right there with her as I’m painting. I giggle and always have a grand time while learning to create art I really love. I just can’t recommend her classes enough! Thank you Emma! 🙂

Love your artwork and classes. In The Shallow End was a challenge but thankfully Emma explains everything so well, especially the water streaking.
I hope she sells some of her artwork. Thank you, Emma, for not letting me give up and your continued words of encouragement.

I just completed IN THE SHALLOW END and what fun! Emma you are a great teacher. I am a realistic painter and have been wanting to get away from it. You have a very flowing and easy way about instructing how to paint this series. You encourage imperfections! How wonderful to paint with no stress! I cannot wait to take another of your classes. I have bought them all.
