WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEARN TO CREATE LOOSER, WELL-DESIGNED PORTRAITS AND FIGURATIVE WORK IN CHARCOAL?

Charcoal is so versatile, and the more that I work with it, the more I develop my skills, which has led to discovering that there is just so much I can do with it!  Not only is charcoal forgiving, but you can create various tones, and layers in your work!  This class will touch on topics such as leaving things out to enhance your design, relationships between figures in your work, and so much more!  Come and join me as we learn to create looser, painterly portraits and figurative artwork with charcoal!  In this class you will learn how to enhance your design by leaving things out!  We will also talk about relationships between two or more figures in a design.

MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE

This course is for the artist that already has a good foundation for drawing portraits and figures.  If you have a good understanding of drafting and values, then you are ready for this course!

This course will have 3 full-length, real-time demonstrations.  I will also share with you what I look for when choosing my reference photos, how to crop your drawing once it is complete, and some strategies I use to get warmed up prior to drawing a final piece.

This purpose of this course is to look at figures and portraits in a new way.  I want you to begin thinking more about the end design of your work, and what you can do to make it more interesting.  We will be discovering how to create a narrative in your work that speaks to others, but most importantly, speaks to you!  The desired outcome for this course is really for you to discover your own truth as you go to the drawing board each and every day.  When you are true to yourself, the world will respond!  I am looking forward to seeing what you create from this class!

DESCRIPTION OF DEMONSTRATIONS

This class is a series of demonstrations in which I share with you my thought processes that I go through as I create my portrait and figurative pieces.  The class will begin with a video where I will discuss how I look at photographs, and what makes for a reference photo to work from in your work.  Not all photographs should be drawn or painted.  We will also talk about how we can use a photograph and leave things out, or add to, to create more interest.

Next, we will move into our first figure piece!  In this lesson, you will learn some various strategies that I use when I am planning out my work.  I don't just go for it!  I actually start with a bit of a plan so that I have an idea of where I want to go with something before I even start.  You will also see how I combine two photographs to use as a reference to create a figure standing in the night lights.

Next, we will move into a figure piece that is in sitting position.  What can be tricky about this type of work is that there can often be a lot of foreshortening.  We will talk about that, and we will discuss how to measure out your work prior to putting any marks on your paper.  Lastly, in this piece, we will really discuss what to edit out.  We do not edit anything out, and you will get to witness my own struggles as I completed this piece.

Finally, I will demonstrate two figures in pose.  In this lesson, we will not only discuss design, but also narrative.  One of my favorite parts of my work is creating a narrative.  Also, whatever my story is, doesn't have to be what you perceive it to be.  We can all come up with our own narrative in our work.

By the end of this class, you should have a good handle on how to choose great reference photos, discovering more about creating good design, and how to portray an interesting narrative to the viewer.

Robert Kelley Headshot

I am Rob Kelley and I am a fine artist/illustrator with a focus on portraiture! I live in Stockton, California, and am a single dad to three children. I studied graphic design at UC Davis and then went on to study illustration at Academy of Art in San Francisco. Although I have had an extensive education in art, I abandoned art for most of my adult life.   That changed, 4 years ago, when my life hit a dramatic shift. At this time, I began looking at why I was in a constant state of low-level unhappiness and discovered that I had abandoned my true and authentic self. I knew that the one thing I needed that had been missing was art! Since then, I have adopted a sink or swim mentality!
