SUMMARY OF THE LESSON

This lesson was originally created for Let's Face It 2018, where we were studies several different art movements.  In this lesson, I studied Kathe Kolwitz!  Her life was very interesting, and her art is so moving!

In this first lesson, we are going to connect with ourselves and begin by taking some selfies.  Most of Kathe's self-portraits were from the neck up.  So, you can easily take some different poses of yourself with your phone from the neck up.  You might do a straight on photograph of your face, or one looking to the side.  I liked the one of my face resting on my hand, so that is the one that I chose.

Once you have chosen your self-portrait that you will use for this lesson, change the image to a black and white.  Next, download an app such as Poster Shine, and posterize your image.  This will help you to find shapes as you are drawing and shading in your portrait.  Remember, as you are drawing your charcoal portrait, to stop along the way, step back, take pictures, and reflect on your portrait.  I also want you to really connect with yourself, see yourself for all that you are, all of your beauty and unique features.  You are special!  Enjoy the activity!
