This is actually Deb Weiers DEBUT solo online art class!  In Wonky Friends and Critters you will have many opportunities to explore ideas such as abstraction, distortion, and the relationship between animals and humans!  This is a chance for you to connect the viewer with ideas that you feel passionate about.  Experiment with new ideas and messages within your artwork.  If you would like to experiment with different mediums, and adding your voice to your artwork, then this is the course for you!  A lot of my process includes playing with different mediums and discovering what works.  Learn how to ‘feel’ your way through a piece and become your own problem-solver in your artwork.

DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

This class consists of four mixed-media lessons!  In your warm up lesson, you will learn to draw wonky critters that you can later photocopy, cut out, and use as collage in other work.  This has become a favorite practice of mine, and I think that you will have a lot of fun with it!  In the following lessons you will learn several other techniques that I have come to love and adore!  Some of the techniques you will view include starting a piece using bits of collage, creating a story image, and solving problems as you go.  You will also discover how to make a random background and then ‘find’ a face in that background!  Overall, you are going to learn to ‘feel’ your way through the process in most of these lessons, which is something I hope you learn to enjoy!

MEET DEB WEIERS - ARTIST/CREATIVE GUIDE

DebWeiersHeadShotNew

I am a mixed media artist living in rural Alberta, Canada. I am enthralled with the human face and the resilience of the human spirit. I try to convey emotion in my work that the viewer can connect with. I will often portray hardship, struggle, or humor. My work is mostly intuitive and I don’t think I will ever get tired of studying the human face and all the emotions that come with it. I like to distort and abstract the face. I am also intrigued by the relationship between humans and animals and animals often show up in my work. I am inspired by nature, other artists, and my 92 year old mother.

This class has inspired me, and jump-started my creativity. I was making art before it, but once I sat through the three lessons and saw all the possibilities, I was hooked, and couldn’t stop. I was up until 3 a.m. completing pictures because I just couldn’t wait until the next day to see the finished artwork. Deb inspired me with her “decide as you go along” philosophy so foreign to my planner nature, and shared so many new materials and techniques that I had never considered. I have been a rather purist watercolorist for years, but dabbling in mixed media has woken me up to all the possibilities—just the recognition that random pencil marks under a wash or scribbles with the paint afterwards can create a whole new texture and feel to a piece was a revelation. I followed her lessons and produced similar things, but was also encouraged to take all the things I had learned and apply them along with my own strengths to find something uniquely mine. The thing I liked best was looking at everyone’s work daily on the Facebook page and having Deb chime in with her positive commentary, suggestions, and observations. She looks like a quiet, self-effacing little person, but when it comes to art she’s a giant dynamo! I have taken a very few classes in my 20 years of messing about with art that changed my trajectory completely, and I believe this is one of them. Thank you, Deb Weiers! and Kara Bullock for featuring her.

This class is amazing! I appreciate Deb sharing her techniques and imparting her knowledge in such a generous way. She’s a wonderful teacher and I feel like I’ve learned so much. The classes are so interesting that I plan on going through the videos several more times. Worth every penny!

Working with Deb Weiers is like a dream come true. She’s attentive and responsive online and her videos are well-done and easy to follow. I love the creativity she encourages and can’t wait to take more of her workshops – So much fun! I’m drawing big and little wonky friends all over the place!

  5. Dindy Reich (verified owner)

This is a most wonderful class! The best thing I have done during Covid 19! Deb is a great teacher!

  6. Terry (verified owner)

Deb Weiers’ class is worth every cent (and the cost is very reasonable too). I’m so glad I found this course as it has been inspiring and challenging. Deb is a great teacher, encourager and generous sharer of tips and ideas. Highly highly recommended!!

  7. Jessie Hollaway

Deb’s class was so much fun and I learned so much about her technique in step by step easy to follow tutorials. I know you will enjoy this class and learn how to create wonky characters if you take it. She is a really great teacher who is easy to listen to and follow along with.

  8. Melissa Andrea (verified owner)

Deb’s inspiring teaching and positive take on the creative process has totally captivated me. This is a wonderful class!

  9. Sally Van Nuys (verified owner)

Oh man, I wish I could give this class 10 stars!! I have taken a boatload of online classes from a variety of web sites and artists. I am happy to report, this class is by far the best in terms of step -by-step instructions. Deb is a fantastic artist who is so generous in sharing all she does to create these amazing works. I have been creating art since 1978 when I took my first acrylics class. I’ve taught in-person classes and shared process videos on YouTube. I know what it takes to put a class together and successfully teach others….Deb has that down pat! I learned so much in terms of her techniques and thought processes as she moves through a painting. To me, that is invaluable information from an instructor! So teaching style=10 stars!

Now, you won’t believe how much fun the faces are to create! They take on a life of their own as you work intuitively (or not), adding critters and shapes as they reveal themselves within the backgrounds. Every face seems to tell you where to go next. I couldn’t have imagined painting these types of faces before I discovered Deb’s work. I followed her for quite a while and was so excited to find out she had online classes here. I took the older class, first, and I was hooked! I could barely wait for the Wonky Faces and Critters class to start. So over the last two months, I have filled three watercolor pads with wonky faces….to say they are addicting is an understatement. Thanks so much to Deb for sharing and teaching these fabulous classes.

I have absolutely no art background, but I loved this class! I learned so much and really had fun. The art that is produced by the other attendees is just amazing! The facebook group is my favorite place to be in the morning! Deb is so talented and so very kind!

  11. Shirley Covey (verified owner)

I give Deb Weiers five stars for her creative genius and then her generosity given to her students. It’s one of the most fun online courses I’ve taken and I highly recommend it. Just observing all the posts as a result of her classes reveals the fun.

  12. Susan Clifford (verified owner)

Debs wonky critters class is so full of helpful guidance and encouragement that before I’d finished this one if already signed up for her other class from 2017. Having done art all my life and taught classes I have really enjoyed her loosening up my style with her go for it attitude. I have been so pleased with all the artwork I have produced along with these lessons and enjoy looking at the Facebook group each morning to see how differently everyone else’s work is from the same lessons. Deb writes comments on all of the mornings posts which is wonderful. Highly recommend. Try it, you won’t be disappointed

  13. Denita Wishart (verified owner)

I just recently walked back into my art studio after walking out 5 years ago. Deb’s course was EXACTLY what I needed to get my mojo flowing again. Her technique is like no other and I have been fascinated by it since finding her approx. 6 or so years ago.

My biggest struggle when creating or painting is perfection. No matter how hard I try, everything always seems to come out precise, clean, and in the lines….NOT at *all* what I am wanting!! Deb actually teaches you step by step how to create a beautiful mess!!

I have taken many online workshops over the years, however, this one is such a fun and soul-fulfilling!! You will be very pleased.

I have always loved Deb Weirs’s wonky yet soulful characters, so I jumped at the chance to take this course. Like other reviewers have said, she is so generous in sharing her techniques and thought processes, and has inspired all of us to loosen up and create our own style of wonkiness. I highly recommend this course to everyone, regardless of your experience level.

  15. Beth Jenkins

I am having fun with my art again. I have learned not to be so serious, to lose my fear of the outcome not being so perfect. ANYTHING can be fixed! Eye opening. I have my creativity back again. Thank you Deb Weiers

  16. Becky (verified owner)

I agree 100% with above. One important piece I’d like to add is the support Deb has shown to all the posts of creations. I have followed closely and have seen her respond to each question asked. This is so essential to me for an online class. I need a teacher who will take the time to continuously follow her students’ posts and respond with critiques and answers. Deb does this in spades and always is there for her students. Thank you Deb.

  17. Corinne Kirkham (verified owner)

Everything that has been written above, and more!

I love Deb’s work and really appreciate how she went about teaching us, not just in the videos, but in the Facebook discussions too. She has commented constructively on everyone’s work and I have benefited so much from her comments and her attention to detail. She must have spent so many hours looking after her students. And somehow she managed to find time to do some of her own art work too!

The course has given me a passion for creating again. And the wonderful thing is, no matter what the student’s level, there is something in this course for everyone. I have learned SOOOO much and cannot begin to express my gratitude.

Deb, I am in awe of you and everything you do.

Can’t wait for the next course – hope it won’t be too far away.

  18. Corinne Kirkham (verified owner)

Sorry – can I add one more thing? On the Kara Bullock Facebook page there was a survey about whether we wanted to have just the combined courses page, or the individual course pages. I am not too sure how many of Deb’s students will have seen this. Personally I would like to have both.

I feel I had most value, however, from Deb’s separate page as everything that was posted was relevant to the course. Sometimes I struggled to keep up with everything that was posted, so I trawl through it frequently. I am worried that if we only had access to the combined page we would miss out on so much! I have also really enjoyed the “collegial” support from the other students and feel we have developed a cameraderie, that might not have been possible if we only accessed the combined courses page.

Hope this makes sense, and I hope it’s OK to write this here!

I am so happy I was introduced to Deb Weiers online classes! She has inspired me in so many ways. I love her casual and carefree style. I love color in art and Deb has shown me how to use it Without fear of making a mistake. Deb’s Wonky Characters are a total joy to me. I am on my third project and loving every Minute of each one. I never know where it will take me and the fun it brings is just what I needed. Thank you Deb! I am Anxiously awaiting the next class!
Thanks to Sally V. who led me to Deb’s classes!
Also I must say Karabullockart.com made connecting and downloading Deb’s classes so easy. Much appreciated.

Loved this class. Deb Weiers is awesome as an instructor as well as a fabulous artist. She is so generous to share her techniques and gives wonderful encouragement to everyone. I will take any class she offers. Can’t wait to see more from her. ❤️❤️❤️

  21. Zelda Lambrecht (verified owner)

I’ve been following Deb for a long time on IG and when the opportunity to learn from her came along my heart stopped! The way she teaches feels as though you’re there painting with her and observing her process which allows you to understand it and therefor create your own magic. My confidence grew because there’s no wrong way to do it and every mark becomes part of your adventure. I sold my first painting after lesson 1. EVER. Even after 4 years of art school. Thanks Deb and Kara for showing us the way. When’s the NEXT class 🙂

  22. Joyce (verified owner)

I needed to loosen up and have more fun while I am creating. Deb’s course opens the door to being creative without precision. She
leads and nudges students to dive into a different way of creating and helped me get past believing art had to look like the reference.
Wonkyness is the way to explore creativity and have fun. I don’t work fast, so the online, go at your own pace is perfect. I love seeing what
everyone creates and continue to be inspired. GREAT FUN CLASS with a very generous teacher.

  23. Courtney Chobert (verified owner)

This is one of a few classes I’ve taken in art( I am not an artist) and by far my favorite!! Allowing yourself the freedom of learning in this class with the fun colors and freedom of style is liberating. Deb Weiers is a generous positive teacher. Her videos have so much content I need to watch them numerous times to catch it all! The FB group is as supportive as Deb, sharing work and ideas along the way!!

  24. Marion Rubin (verified owner)

I really fell in love with Deb’s art….I tried and tried but somethings were out of my reach so when I saw she had a course I didn’t think twice and jumped to subscribe…and oh boy, what a change!!! Deb is very generous with her tips and « secrets » and I progressed very fast because I , at last, understood how she gets certain effects. I really loved that course and I’m so grateful to her for sharing her art!

  25. Jamie Chenault (verified owner)

Deb Weiers is a great instructor! So easy to follow and this class is fun! Her technique is easy but the finished project is phenomenal! I definitely recommend this class for a unique experience.

  26. Ginny Hoppe (verified owner)

I love to draw and finding Deb’s class is the best thing that could have happened. I took the first class and di dokay but this one has helped my painting with thr ink drawing turn in to somrthing I am really proud of. Shr has made this class so much fu n. You really learn a lot from Deb t hat encourages you to keep going. Thank you Kara for bringing her on board. I would recommend this class to anyone and to those who dont think they cant draw.

  27. Barbara (verified owner)

Deb class is so great and her instructions on the online is so easy to follow .Fabulous artist !!and there is no right or wrong way lets you go with the flow . I love Facebook page And the encouragement from the other artists and Deb herself .❤️❤️❤️❤️

  28. jeffannem (verified owner)

I loved Deb’s class. It was different than many of the classes I’ve taken because after the first lesson, I wasn’t trying to follow her painting step-by-step and in fact, Deb’s instruction really allowed me to ‘feel my way’ along with the painting and see what evolves. I was very surprised and pleased with the results. Creating the paintings was so fun, I know now that when I am at a loss for what to work on or frustrated with what I am working on, I can take a break and create Wonky Friends and Wonky Critters.

  29. Reta Grill (verified owner)

I saw Deb’s art, and I wondered how anyone could be so creative. I always felt like I had no creativity in my brain, but after taking her class, although it took a while, I was able to see the possibility of creativity…wow!!! She shows you processes that she uses, and she just inspires one to have fun and reach for the moon. THERE ARE NO WRONG ANSWERS!!! What I mean is that you don’t have to be an artist to become “an artist” …someone who just loves to paint and create, for hours and hours, which is what I now do in my retirement. I am enjoying life and I think it is mostly because I discovered painting, and I dared to try an art class…Deb’s art class. Five stars from me, for sure.

  30. Jeanie Coen (verified owner)

Deb’s classes showed me how to have fun with my art. I no longer strive for perfection…so freeing. I am 82 and quite “shakey” so this just seems to add to the “wonkyness” and when you join Deb Weier’s Art Community on Facebook you can ask for ideas or comments from her and her other students…they are all so supportive. I feel like I have been adopted by a long lost family. I recommend this class if you want some new ideas and some fun in your life.

  31. Libby Lynch (verified owner)

I LOVE this class! Deb has the most generous teacher heart! She interacts with her students in her Facebook Group and encourages everyone along the way. This class helped me find a playfulness that was missing from my own work.

  32. Kathy Lewis (verified owner)

This is one of my favorite all time classes. Deb’s lessons are well planned and executed. Her work has inspired me for years and this class did not disappoint. I love how this course stretched my imagination and helped me think outside the box. I would sign up for anything Deb Weiers teaches!
