How Would it Feel to Let Go and Enjoy the Freedom of Exploring an Expressive Way of Creating Portraits?
Join Jen Sterling in EXPRESSIVE REALISM: The Creative Process Demystified! This course includes the step-by-step process of building a portrait using black and white paint, and an intentional palette of natural skin tones. Discover an experience that allows you freedom to explore color, edge quality, transparent versus opaque layers, shapes, and expressive mark making. This course places a strong focus on accurate proportions, paint application, values, and mixing skin tones. In addition, it gives you a glimpse behind the curtain of what it looks like to engage in the creative process where the outcome is uncertain, but each step leads to the next in order to unearth a painting that could not have been planned for. DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS
This class consists of one in-depth, portrait painting lesson. We will begin by creating a solid structure to work from using plumb lines to assist in placement and proportions. We will use this process, with black and white paint, to create our initial portrait. From there, we will begin to have fun with color. We will explore color saturation, how to mute color intensity, and various color combination to portray realistic skin tones. Next we will begin experimenting with the background. Learn to create a strong mood and visual effect for your piece. I will introduce you to glazing, which can be a beautiful process to use in portraits. It can really create a feeling of depth with it's layering effects. Our final videos will focus on shape and edge, both which are important when creating an expressive portrait! In this tutorial you will see my creative process, with all of my struggles and how I overcome challenges along the way. Working in this way puts equal emphasis on technique and creativity! Get ready to unearth the unknown! This course can be done in oils or acrylics!

MEET JEN STARLING - ARTIST
Jen focused seriously on ballet and modern dance throughout her childhood and adult life. She has a BA in Performance Art from the University of MD, and danced professionally for many years. She dabbled in visual art from a young age, but has very little formal training. In May 2015 she took an art class that awoke her creative nature, and propelled her into the world of two dimensional art. No stranger to discipline, she has dedicated herself to learning from many accomplished artists, a demanding studio practice, and managing her business, “Jen Starling Art”. In addition, Jen has an elementary teaching license, and has taught youth and adults in numerous settings for the last twenty years. She currently teaches art classes at the Art Student League and Curtis Art Center in CO.

Wonderful class. Love Jen Starling! My final painting didn’t look like hers but it was definitely my own unique creation, which I love!
