Would You Like to Sculpt Dainty, Dreamy, Playful, and Absurd Female Figures?  Looking for a Way to Create that Reduces Stress While Creating Beautiful Sculptures You Can Paint and Adorn?

Join Katrina Szyszkoski in THE WHIMSY QUEENS where Katrina will teach you what she absolutely loves to do, create lovely and delightful, feminine figures!  Katrina's sculptures are very delicately formed with a definite emphasis on the female face and figure. They evoke a sense of daintiness and dreaminess and playfulness and absurdity, with a little touch of melancholy surrounding them.  For this workshop, Katrina will share with you some of her inspiration and what excites her.  Then she will mix it up, and derail, and float off into wonderland and create something a little bit different.  We will be taking a bit of clay and pull, stretch, push, mold it all while reducing stress.  We are going to create two projects.  When they are full cured and ready, we will paint, glaze, adorn and beautify them.  We hope to see you in class!

DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

In our first lesson, students will sculpt with air dry clay a partially nude seated female figure with air dry clay. We will paint,  glaze and embellish the figure and place her in a painted wooden box  for presentation.  This lesson will help students to become familiar with the touch and feel of air dry clay.  We will also experiment with proportion, anatomy, and altering or exaggerating elements of anatomy to create a more interesting figure. Lastly, we will explore different ways to give your figure a unique and individual personality experimenting with embellishments.

In lesson 2, we will sculpt with air dry clay a partially nude standing female figure holding a bird. After curing we will paint, glaze and embellish the figure and present her in a roughly 5 x 7 space in a frame, canvas or substrate of your choice. If desired, students can paint and/or collage background of substrate that figure will be affixed to.  These lessons really allow you to get creative with the figure and the background.

MEET KATRINA SZYSZKOSKI - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR

kszyszkoski2022lesson!

An attraction to broken Greco Roman sculpture, American Colonial folk art and all things miniature, has shaped Katrina Szyszkoski's style in creating peculiar and tiny clay works.

Delicately formed, her figurative sculptures evoke a sense of daintiness, dreaminess, playfulness and absurdity, sometimes with a bit of melancholy surrounding them.

Much of Katrina's inspiration comes from living and traveling in Japan, where she was surrounded by the uniqueness and ambiguity of contemporary Japanese art and craft.

When not tending to her family, including two nutty dogs and one besieged but defiant cat, she assembles little worlds with her own curious and unexpected bent.

Katrina lives in the foothills of the Colorado Rockies, surprisingly, in a fairly large house.

COURSE SUPPLIES

Below is a list of the supplies that I will be using for the projects in this course.  However, you are always encouraged to use what you have on hand.

  • Air dry clay:  I experimented and found the brands Creative Paper Clay and DAS to work best for this project. You could also use Sculpey brand, but that involves curing it in an oven specifically for clay which is fine if you have.
  • Silicone tipped clay tool: I find them at my local art store but they can also be found on Amazon HERE.
  • Exacto knife (blade can be dull)
  • Watercolor and acrylic paints: your choice in colors
  • A minimum of a 5x7 substrate to affix your figure to.  This can be a frame with a 5x7 opening, or a 5x7 canvas, wood, or even a 8x10 canvas, but no larger than that.
  • Inexpensive paint brushes in two sizes, medium (8 or similar) and small for fine details
  • Small paint palette
  • Sandpaper (optional)
  • Jar of water, paper towels, soft tissue for wiping glaze, such as kleenex
  • Optional:
    • book paper for collaging background of substrate
    • collage medium, a gel matte medium such as Liquitex or Golden brands to glue down paper.
