DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

Watch Michael Carson, in his own personal studio, where he shares his entire process of creating a figurative painting.  Watch as Mike goes through piles of reference photos, and piece-meals a few together, to create something inspiring to paint.  He will demonstrate how he "draws" the figure using paint and the method he uses to simplify this process.   Next, Mike will show how he adds color to his paintings using a very limited palette of vibrant paints.  He will explore the use of a palette knife to add texture and interest to his paintings.  Throughout these videos, you will feel as though you are sitting in his studio, watching him create a beautiful piece of art, and you will know exactly how he arrived at the final piece!

BONUS VIDEOS

Mike also wanted to share some extra bonus videos with you all in this class!  He gets asked so often about his patterned backgrounds, and resin substrates.  So, he asked if we could also create videos showing you how he creates both of these.  In the first bonus video, Mike will show you how takes a copy of a pattern and transfers it onto his substrate to create a wallpapered background, or a pattern on dresses, and so on!

The second bonus video is a demonstration of how Mike creates his resin substrate.  The artwork shown on resin, are not part of this lesson.  This lesson will only show you how to create the resin substrate so that you can then paint on it yourself.

MEET MICHAEL CARSON - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR

MikeCarsonHeadShotCloseUp

Mike Carson is a Minneapolis painter, and graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design,  whose artwork can be found in private and corporate collections throughout the United States. His volition is to emphasize relationships of color and light and allow the texture of his brush stroke to move a viewers eye through the art.

Artist Statement:

"My work is first and foremost figurative studies. It's what I like to paint, my biggest challenge and my greatest payoff. My nondescript surroundings help me create a mood or a story that I am trying to relay through my painting. Inspiration comes from architectural interiors as well as fashion and my work allows me to explore and explain this side of myself. Seeing how the work evolves, the subtle and the drastic differences, and looking forward to the future is what keeps me painting. I view a painting as a success when I take from it something new that follows me into my next work. It's just about learning to become a better painter."

  1. Joanna Mann (verified owner)

This was an amazing workshop! MIchael Carson really shared his processes, both physically putting paint on a surface and his thought processes to create a good design and painting. Yes, like all artists, he is human and he changed his mind on what he created and he showed us his revisions! His color palette is so different from the norm and it creates a harmonious color scheme!

  2. Kirsten Matti (verified owner)

This is the best painting workshop I have ever taken, hands down. I found it very helpful to watch Michael’s processes for how he decides what he wants to paint. Watching him change his mind several times about the structure of the work was really freeing. I feel excited to work on my own material after watching this.

  3. Libbi Corson (verified owner)

This was exactly class that I needed to take my painting to another level. I have a better understanding of oils now and they have become my favorite medium. Michael’s transparency was so refreshing. He gave me too many “tools” to list! I go back to this class often when I feel “stuck”. I highly recommend this class1

  4. Dan Ilten (verified owner)

  5. Donald Critchlow (verified owner)

Amazing teacher! Amazing artist! Let’s us dangerously into his psyche and process. Freeing how he views reference and art and mistakes. A priceless workshop for advancing your perception of figurative art.
