Why do landscape painters have two versions of every color? Have you ever found yourself staring at your palette wondering which color is the best choice? In this lesson you’ll discover why landscape painters use a split palette and how it takes the guesswork out of mixing paint. You’ll see how to layout your palette to keep track of which color is warm or cool. Practice mixing warm and cool temperature versions of each color. MEET KIM VANDERHOEK - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR
Kim VanDerHoek is an American contemporary fine artist who creates vibrant, textural oil paintings of landscapes and urban scenes in her Southern California studio.
Born in Southern California and raised in the mountains of Big Bear City, Kim spent many hours as a child climbing trees, sledding down snow-covered hills, horseback riding and hiking through the woods. Surrounded by the wild beauty of the forest Kim developed an early appreciation for the outdoors and a fascination for urban environments, which she continues to explore today through painting.
After graduating in 1993 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in illustration from the California College of the Arts in Oakland, California, Kim worked as a graphic designer for 11 years. She left the design field to pursue a career as a full-time painter.
She learned to paint by painting en Plein Air because it combined her love of being outside, creating art and studying from life. “I enjoy the challenges Plein Air painting poses. Dealing with the weather, changing light and other hurdles of outdoor painting has forced me to to have a plan for each painting, to paint with commitment and to fearlessly experiment .” Kim feels that through Plein Air painting she has gained a better understanding of the effects of light and atmosphere. She aims to translate those effects into her studio paintings. Currently, she is working on a series of studio paintings documenting iconic bridges across the U.S.

This is an outstanding class. Kim introduced us to using warm and cool colors to give our painting the needed depth all landscape painting should have. I have struggled in the past on how to take a good reference photo and turn it into a great painting. Kim walks you through an easy steps to make this happen. I am seeing my paintings elevated to the next level with this class. If you are a landscape painter or ever wanted to give it a try, take this class. You won’t be disappointed.

Kim VanDerHoek is a terrific instructor and a total pro who genuinely meets everyone right where they are on their painting journey. Her time spent critiquing individual paintings is worth the price alone. Her helpful encouragement is priceless.

Kim has done a great job of breaking down the process of landscape painting in this class. From the beginning with how to choose a photo to paint from to describing her choice of palette colors this class will give you the confidence to work from your own photos. As far as the painting videos go they are easy to follow with each step explained well. She takes the time to explain all the finishing details to make your painting look more professional. With the class you can get support through a Facebook group where Kim checks in daily and provides a detailed critique to help you learn and grow in your painting journey. Not all teachers will do that. I encourage you to take this class, it’s wonderful! Looking forward to more classes with Kim.

This class is one of the best I’ve taken and I’ve taken many! Kim’s explanations are thorough, clear and entertaining. She is showing everything as she speaks. I learned a lot of new material and was also quickly reminded of concepts I’ve learned before. Kara does a wonderful job with the learning platform. The sound is clear and the camera work allows you to see Kim’s palette and also the painting as she works. When she works on details, the camera zooms in.

I loved this class! I learned so much! Will download all videos and will keep re-watching them as needed. I also appreciated Kim’s level of involvement in the Facebook group: I received a very thoughtful and detailed feedback for each of my posts. It was above and beyond from what I expected. Thank you Kim!

I could not be happier with Kim’s class Landscape Essentials. . Prior to this, I have only painted landscapes with full length tutorials and I have zero experience with composition and color mixing. Kim has segments for composition and color mixes. She explains why she makes the choices she does throughout the painting. I hope Kim will be teaching more classes in the future because I will buy every one of them while on my journey to landscape artist.

Kim is an excellent teacher. What she does with the split pallet, cool and warm paint is brilliant. I have struggled in the past with taking a good photo and making it a great painting. Kim taught us how to overcome this. If you want to take your landscape paintings to the next level, this is the class for you.

This is an excellent class in Landscape Painting. I have a degree in Art Education and I can affirm that Kim is a natural teacher who is easy to follow. She made Landscape Painting Ala Prima fun and accessible to all levels of ability. Kim skillfully broke down the steps to creating a pleasing composition from choosing your inspiration photo, sketching editing, to mixing color and applying paint to canvas. Kim offered helpful constructive critique of our work and I learned so much from reading her comments. You will not be disappointed!

This is the best class I have taken. It was great to see Kim paint and her process, it made so much sense from every aspect!! Cant wait to take another class with her.

Kim’s landscape class is uniquely thorough in covering the process from concept to finishing touches. Her feedback during the class is exceptionally extensive–especially for an online class.

I’d love to take more classes from Kim and went to her website hoping there would be more to purchase, but not yet. It’s one thing to be a knowledgeable and experienced painter, but completely another to be a wonderful teacher. She was so clear in her approach to the field of poppies, what worked and why other things that you would likely try might not be as effective. Very good method to show the common pitfalls! Her lessons were so helpful to me in my quest to know how to paint landscapes. The warm colors in the fore and cooler towards the back was the biggest gem ever! I haven’t taken many painting lessons and just go by instinct – which sometimes works out and often does not. I need courses that aren’t too beginner since I have painted with acrylics, but aren’t too advanced that it goes beyond lessons and into demonstration. Kim has so much knowledge of reworking landscape photos and how to create an inviting painting that leads you in and makes you linger. Her color mixing was also slow enough to actually follow! Please Kim, do on how you alter photos in Procreate, once on creating space/depth alone, one on nocturnes and one on painting skies! I’d also love more landscape color mixing lessons – all the greens are overwhelming. I’ll take all of Kim’s courses!

This is an excellent lesson. The creation of depth and perspective is a very strong indication of the quality of the course.

I just finished the Landscape Essentials course and am 100% pleased with my investment! Kim’s advice on choosing (and editing, cropping, etc) a reference photo was invaluable. I’ve written her questions to ask when choosing a reference photo in a notebook and will be referring to them before beginning any painting! Many unsuccessful painting attempts of mine could have been avoided had I answered those questions ahead of time! Composing a painting with those questions in mind will definitely help artists of all skill levels be set up for success. She is easy to follow along with and explains the reasoning behind her decisions so we can carry those principles into future paintings.. I also enjoyed hearing her speak on topics like photo realism and impressionism, and deciding where we want to go as artists. I highly recommend this class to anyone interested in the landscape painting process! (and you end up with a beautiful piece as the cherry on top!)
