Description
Improv means creating on the fly, making marks in response to what is happening on the page instead of making marks towards a predetermined/anticipated end result. Improvisational Drawing is what I call the process where subsequent marks are chosen based on what is revealed in the prior ones. Relishing in the idea of working from the cuff and enhancing intuitive decision making, this course will introduce students to building intuitive and exciting designs from an improvisational base. Students will work with a singular painting of subject matter, actively layering drawings overtop each other, utilizing the create-destroy-rebuild cycle, in building a cohesive and exciting piece on the fly. We will identify line and shape qualities unique to the essence of our subject matter, focus on balancing design elements, and work in a responsive way to the work as it evolves. Drawings will initially be done in soft media on a forgiving surface (paper or hardboard), with editing happening via paint/gesso/soft media. Once students feel their way into the process and unearth compositions they find intriguing, they will introduce paint to their designs, massing drawn marks based on value or color families, and continuing to build from generalized form to specific details, applying the idea of improvisation to active decision making as they paint.

MEET KIMBERLY SANTINI
Kimberly Kelly Santini's artistic career began in 2000 with a focus on life-size and larger pet portraits. In 2006, she committed to daily painting, completing one small portrait every day. This dedication led to the creation of her blog, Painting a Dog a Day (www.PaintingaDogaDay.com), which showcases each piece along with its backstory. Notably, this blog remains active today. Her daily painting practice earned her numerous accolades, including opportunities to paint for the American Kennel Club and serve as the official artist of the 2015 Kentucky Derby.
Over the years, Santini has worked tirelessly to refine and grow her technique, striving to create distinctive work that aligns with her personal priorities. She embraces an intuitive, direct painting approach, infusing her art with joy and intention. Her paintings explore the interconnectedness and balance of life, using animals as vessels for landscape elements and other symbolic details. Santini's unique perspective and experience position her to guide students not only in mastering their materials but also in discovering ways to create art that feels meaningful and uniquely their own.
In addition to her daily painting practice, Santini runs an online classroom, serves on the board of the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors—one of the oldest women-centric organizations in the country—reads voraciously, and cultivates dahlias. She resides in Michigan's Thumb area with her husband, close enough to their adult children and extended family to maintain strong connections.
