Description
Discover how to bring your portrait ideas to life in this 4-day acrylic painting workshop with artist and instructor Kara Bullock. Begin by learning how to generate creative references using Midjourney and Canva, then move into designing, drafting, and painting a compelling portrait on canvas. Next, learn all about mixing color and applying interesting marks on your canvas to craft a loose-realistic, inspiring portrait. This workshop is perfect for artists who want to expand their creative process, learn new tools, and gain confidence in their portrait painting skills. You’ll leave feeling inspired and ready to continue creating at home with new techniques and fresh ideas.
 Day 1:
9:00 – 3:00 - Workshop
- The workshop begins with a full day dedicated to Midjourney and Canva (you will need both of these apps), where you’ll learn how to generate, edit, and manipulate imagery to use as references for your portrait. Kara will guide you through her process for shaping ideas, refining compositions, and preparing images that inspire exciting paintings.
Day 2:
9:00 – 3:00 - Workshop
You’ll begin to explore design, composition, and drafting on Day 2, learning how to plan a successful portrait. Kara will also show you how she uses tools such as a projector and poster-sized prints to assist with composition and scaling—helpful guides that support your drafting skills. We will also begin painting today.
Days 3 and 4:
9:00 – 3:00 - Workshop
Days 3 and 4 focus entirely on painting. You’ll build layers, develop form, work with color, and create a portrait that feels alive and expressive. Kara will work closely with you as you paint, offering demonstrations, guidance, and personalized feedback.
Important Note About Imagery
In this workshop, students will not be working from Kara’s images. Students will be creating their own original images using Midjourney and Canva during day 1. This ensures that every artist arrives with personal, unique references that reflect their own ideas, style, and creative direction. There may or may not be free trials for these apps, so please look into cost prior to signing up for the workshop as these are required.

MEET KARA BULLOCK
I am Kara Bullock, a self-taught artist, educator, and entrepreneur based in Southern California. For over a decade, I taught in elementary classrooms and later at the university level, where I specialized in education, child development, and online teaching. My love for art began as a personal hobby, a way to nurture creativity while balancing a busy teaching career and raising a family.
In 2013, after taking a few online art classes myself, I had a realization: I could combine my love for teaching with my passion for art to create something new. In 2015, I launched Kara Bullock Art School, starting with a single course called Let’s Face It. What began as a small experiment has since grown into a thriving global art community, with hundreds of courses taught by professional artists from around the world.
At the heart of everything I do is my passion for people living lives they truly love. I believe that a fulfilling life includes creative expression, but also the freedom to choose your own path—whether that means creating art for joy or building a business as your own boss.
