Description
This workshop will be focused on learning methods for creating lifelike, intentional and dynamic portraits. We’ll be using mixed media and combining traditional and unconventional methods. There are so many stages to embrace when creating a mixed media portrait, and together we’ll explore each one.
In this workshop, we’ll explore everything from preparing your canvas, creating a dynamic composition, picking a working color palette, choosing the best mixed media elements, and exploring the layering process. We’ll use paints, found objects, fabrics, papers and more.
Class size limited to 14 students.

Workshop Schedule:
Friday, Day 1:
- 9:30 – 4:30 - Workshop
- Each day will consist of demos by Juliette and plenty of time for students to practice the process and create their own portraits.
Saturday, Day 2:

You are welcome to use any good-quality acrylic paints and mediums that you enjoy working with. Some of my favorite brands include Golden, Utrecht, Liquitex, and Winsor & Newton, but there are many wonderful options available!
A note about supplies: The colors and materials listed below are suggestions, not requirements. You do not need to purchase everything on this list. For example, if you already have Raw Umber instead of Burnt Umber, or Cadmium Yellow Hue instead of Cadmium Yellow Light, those will work just fine!
I encourage you to use what you already have and consider adding new supplies as you work through the course and discover what you enjoy.
Suggested Acrylic Paint Colors
- Zinc White
- Titanium White
- Black (any)
- Yellow Ochre
- Burnt Umber
- Cadmium Yellow Light
- Cadmium Red Light
- Ultramarine Blue
- Phthalo Green
- Turquoise Blue or Teal
Acrylic Mediums
The following mediums are suggested for techniques we will explore throughout the course.
- Heavy Gel or Regular Gel (8 oz jar): Used as an adhesive when incorporating mixed-media materials into your artwork. Choose any sheen you prefer. I personally use semi-gloss.
- Fluid Medium: Used to create transparent glazes and layers of color.
You may use any mediums that are compatible with your acrylic paints.
Brushes & Painting Tools
- Palette Knife or Spatula: For applying and manipulating paint and mediums.
- Acrylic Paintbrushes: A variety of small and large brushes that you feel comfortable using. Include a few fine detail brushes and larger brushes for backgrounds and broader areas.
- Wide Brush (approximately 2 inches): An inexpensive brush works well for applying mediums.
- Palette: Any palette you prefer. Disposable paper palettes work especially well.
- Spray Bottle: For misting your paints with water.
- Rags or Shop Towels: For cleaning brushes and managing excess paint.
Drawing Materials
Bring along any drawing supplies you enjoy using, such as:
- Pencils
- Markers
- Charcoal
- Scrap paper
Mixed-Media & Collage Materials
One of the exciting parts of this course is exploring how different materials can add texture, interest, and personality to your artwork.
Feel free to collect ephemera, fabrics, found objects, and other interesting materials that inspire you.
Here are a few ideas:
- Playing cards
- Newspapers and magazine clippings
- Maps and old book pages
- Advertisements
- Postcards
- Parking tickets and ticket stubs
- Old letters and handwritten notes
- Vintage photographs
- Paper bags
- Business cards
- Stamps
- Fabric scraps
- Other found papers and objects
Remember: There is no need to purchase a collection of new supplies before getting started. Look around your home, explore what you already own, and gather materials that catch your eye. Sometimes the most unexpected items make the most interesting additions to a painting!
Most importantly, come ready to experiment, explore, and have fun with the creative process.

MEET JULIETTE BELMONTE
Juliette Belmonte is a Costa Rican born artist living and working in the southeastern United States.
Her signature style mixes traditional and abstract painting techniques and incorporates multimedia and found objects to create rich, layered portraits that evoke and inspire.
Juliette has moved extensively throughout her life in the US and central America and is currently based in northeast Florida. She is inspired largely by the colors, the rhythm and the people that inhabit her ever changing surroundings.
She has studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York.
Some of her clients include Conde Nast, Hyatt Centric hotel midtown Manhattan, Library Collection wines, Brandenburg , University of Utah, Spirituality and Health magazine and numerous private collections.

Airport and Hotels
If you are flying in, the closest airport to the studio is Santa Ana - John Wayne Airport. It is about 5 miles away from the studio, with several hotels nearby as well. Our clients' favorite hotels are listed below.
Budget friendly and near the freeway
People LOVE staying in Newport Beach, at hotels or airbnbs. It is about 20 minutes from the studio via uber/car. There are also several Airbnb's closer to the studio, as well!

Workshop Policies: Due to limited class size, payment is non-refundable, but is transferable ONLY if the workshop sells out. If you purchase a workshop and are unable to attend, AND if there is a wait list for the course, we will offer your spot to a person on the wait list. If someone on the wait list is able to take your spot, we will reimburse you your tuition, minus a $75 admin fee for handling the replacement. If you are unable to attend the workshop, and the workshop has not sold out with a wait list, we will not be able to refund your purchase.
