DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

In this comprehensive course, students will embark on a structured journey to master oil painting, beginning with foundational drawing skills using a single paint color to sketch the initial portrait, focusing on accurate proportions and understanding oil paint behavior. The course progresses to a monochromatic underpainting technique with two colors, where students mix values to create depth and drama through light and shadow. Adding color introduces students to mixing skin tones, enhancing the portrait's realism with careful attention to color temperature and saturation. Highlights are integrated in the next phase, emphasizing precision in value, color, and blending to bring the portrait to life.

The course then explores the nuances of reflected light and the addition of abstract elements to the shoulders, enriching the artwork's depth and texture. Finally, students learn to select background colors and values and to paint realistic hair, applying lighter values into wet paint to achieve natural-looking curls. Each lesson builds on the last, culminating in a well-rounded skill set in portrait oil painting.
