This course, with Rosso Crimson, will teach you how to take inspiration from a photo reference and create a captivating painting.  Rosso will begin by showing you how she gets prepared for creating a painting, from sharing her studies, to color mixing, to transferring her studies to her substrate.  She will share her color palette with you, and what paints she likes to mix to create interesting skin tones. Watch as she mixes these paints to create the palette needed to complete her figurative portrait.  Next, she will share how she takes a study and transfers that idea onto a substrate

After she has her palette ready and her study transferred, Rosso is ready to share her step-by-step process for painting a figure.  Watch as Rosso begins her figure painting, first blocking in the portrait and then moving into adding gold leaf to the background.  After that, Rosso will share her thoughts as she decides whether she wants to create a large hairstyle, or flowers on the models head.  This is an interesting conversation that will be helpful in your own compositions.  Next, we will move in to the design and composition of the dress and background.  Again, you will listen in to Rosso's thoughts as she composes and paints this part of the painting.  As Rosso continues on in the painting process, you will be a part of her decision making as she chooses paint colors to create effects, shadow, value, and more.  You will discover the choices that she comes to in order to make an ordinary painting, a great one!  We hope you will be inspired by her process and adapt it to your own style of painting!  Please join us in class!

In her portraiture, Rosso Emerald Crimson renders female subjects who emerge through a haze of pastels and muted tones.

The artist often depicts the women and girls staring forward with unsmiling expressions and are reimagined within timeless landscapes.

Technically, while the portrayal of the figures is achieved by a meticulous rendering using traditional oil painting techniques, the deconstruction (and reconstruction) of the surrounding derives from the juxtaposition of different media, including spray paint, vigorous scraping and scratching of the surface and application of metal leaf and gilding. The creative process is deliberately chaotic in the making yet geared towards the achievement of a sense of harmony and a visually engaging imagery.

I was looking forward to this course and it didn’t disappoint. Everything felt right, from planning to painting. I’ve been wanting to bring a bit of abstraction into my figures and received valuable processes that will work with my art style. I really loved doing the small color study because I was able to work out issues before starting something larger. Thank you so much. I’m sure I will be watching it again.

What an absolute treat! Taken from start to finish. I love Rosso’s work, and seeing this beautiful painting develop is rewarding and highly inspirational. I recommend this to seasoned and beginner artists, as you will find hidden gems within these videos. The content is clear and well presented with each step professionally presented. I will certainly revisit these wonderful videos many times in the future. Full of artistic energy! Thank you Rosso Emerald Crimson.

Very helpful class! Rosso generously shares great tips for building texture and interest into paintings, including acrylic toning, stencils, glazing, and metal leaf, as well as the beautiful portrait. I’m usually daunted by larger canvas sizes, but the steps that she demonstrated made it fun to complete a larger piece!
