Join artist Robert Kelley for an immersive three-day workshop exploring the art of charcoal portraiture.

Known for his expressive, painterly approach, Robert will guide you through creating portraits with strong values, beautiful transitions, expressive marks, and a sense of depth and life.

With plenty of personalized instruction along the way, Robert will help you strengthen your skills, work through challenges, and develop greater confidence with charcoal. Whether you are newer to the medium or ready to take your portraits to the next level, you’ll leave with new techniques and a deeper understanding of creating expressive charcoal portraits.

Day 1 – May 14
9:00 – 4:00 – Zoom
Robert will begin each day with a portrait demonstration, focusing on key techniques and common challenges artists face when drawing the portrait. Throughout the day, he will offer additional short demonstrations as questions and challenges arise. The majority of each day will be devoted to working on your own portrait, with Robert circulating throughout the room to provide personalized guidance, feedback, and one-on-one instruction.

Day 2 – May 15
9:00 – 4:00 – Workshop
Robert will begin each day with a portrait demonstration, focusing on key techniques and common challenges artists face when drawing the portrait. Throughout the day, he will offer additional short demonstrations as questions and challenges arise. The majority of each day will be devoted to working on your own portrait, with Robert circulating throughout the room to provide personalized guidance, feedback, and one-on-one instruction.

Meet Robert Kelley

Rob Kelley is a fine artist/illustrator with a focus on portraiture! He lives in Stockton, California, and is a single dad to three children. Rob studied graphic design at UC Davis and then went on to study illustration at Academy of Art in San Francisco. Although he has had an extensive education in art, he abandoned it for most of his adult life. That changed in 2014, when his life hit a dramatic shift. At that time, he began looking at why he was in a constant state of low-level unhappiness and discovered that he had abandoned his true and authentic self. He knew that the one thing he needed that had been missing was art! Since then, Rob has adopted a sink or swim mentality! He now creates full-time as an artist. He also offers online courses through Kara Bullock Art School. To give back to his community, Rob offers a FREE workshop every Wednesday night at The Catalyst in downtown Stockton. It is his desire to help others find the joy in creating!

The door to the studio is on the first floor, in the front of the building, next to the mailboxes.

Parking is available on the street. Students will also be emailed a map to a parking lot.

AIRPORTS AND HOTELS

If you are flying in, the closest airport to the studio is Santa Ana – John Wayne Airport.  It is about 5 miles away from the studio, with several hotels nearby as well.  Our clients’ favorite hotels are listed below.

Other neighboring places that are fun to stay include Newport Beach and Old Town Orange.

CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY

Due to our limited class sizes, workshop tuition is non-refundable.

However, if you are unable to attend and the workshop is sold out with a wait list, please contact us. We will offer your spot to the next person on the wait list. If we are able to fill your spot, your tuition will be refunded, minus a $75 administrative fee.

If the workshop is not sold out or we are unable to fill your spot from the wait list, we are unable to issue a refund.

***These policies also apply to a Zoom workshop.

CANCELLATIONS

If the workshop does not meet the minimum enrollment, it may be cancelled. You will be notified at least 30 days before the workshop and will receive a full refund. In the rare event that a workshop must be cancelled due to an emergency or circumstances beyond our control, all workshop tuition will also be refunded in full.
