DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

This class is made up of three lessons!  In the Warm Up, we will discuss our watercolor palette including organizing colors, filling the palette with pigment, and creating a color reference card. We will apply absorbent ground and painter’s masking tape to the paper and discuss my purpose for doing so. We will practice applying the watercolors to the prepared paper to discover how it interacts with the absorbent ground. This practice allows the student to understand the ability to apply and remove paint without fear.

In Lesson 1, we will use a reference photo to draw and paint a figure using a limited color palette to create depth and values. Drawing will include finding points on the figure that are in relationship to one another to achieve a likeness of the reference image. This lesson will give us an opportunity to practice removing, lifting, pushing and pulling the pigment.

Lesson 2 will build on Lesson 1’s methodology. The drawing will be more complicated than Lesson 1 and challenge the student to focus on finding angles, negative space, and relationships to capture the likeness in the reference photo. We will discuss the benefits of sketching in a notebook prior to developing the final drawing. Layers of paint will be used to describe light, shadow, and values using a slightly larger color palette. The use of absorbent ground on top of the watercolor will also be demonstrated to increase contrast of darks and lights.

MEET DEANNA STRACHAN-WILSON

Deannawithpainting3

I live in Eugene, Oregon with my husband and two cats. I work full-time helping people find jobs and housing. Because I work full-time, I need to create in small chunks of time. Watercolor and other water-soluble materials work perfect for this.

I am inspired by the world around me and often paint my emotions as witnessed in various watercolor faces as well as in light and whimsical works of art. Momentum and ideas come from each small piece I create which sometimes leads to something larger. My goal is to do something artistic as often as possible, keep the energy and ideas going, and learn, share, and grow with my art community.

Deanna is an exceptional artist and instructor. I first fell in love with her quirky artistic talents on my first year with LFI 2022. Unfortunately with her full time job, she doesn’t have as much time for teaching. So when this course came available, I was very excited. I love the challenge of watercolours and not many art teachers in LFI use them in the lessons. Her minimalistic but bold experimental approach is challenging yet motivating. Her lessons can benefit all levels of artists. I have learned many art tips from her that can be transferred to other media types. For example, using absorbent ground with watercolours on tanned not white mixed media paper. Additionally I enjoy writing messages on my art. Deanna had beneficial information regarding how and why to use messages in your art. Thank you so much.
