DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS
In Robert Kelley's latest class, you'll get to see him in action as he creates two different pieces: a portrait and a still life. He'll start by showing you his six-step process with a portrait, beginning with a reference photo. Robert will explain how he looks at the photo and decides what to keep and what to leave out before he starts drawing. He'll talk you through his thoughts on what to include and omit, focusing on the story behind the piece. You'll learn how to figure out the story of your artwork from the very beginning, making decisions about what to include, leave out, and how to handle the gray areas. One of the main points to this class is really learning how to have focal points and supporting roles in your artwork, sort of like main characters and supporting roles in a story!
Next, you'll watch him go through the next five steps to his process: drafting, blocking in shapes, adding depth and value, refining the drawing, and finishing with style and details. You will not miss a single beat.
In the second project, you'll watch Robert use the same process for drawing a still life. In this project, it will become very clear how layers upon layers of varying values create depth in an artwork. While the same is true in a portrait, the still life will particularly highlight how to make the subject come forward while keeping the background elements out of focus. You'll see that no matter the subject, Robert follows the same steps every time. By learning his method, you can confidently draw anything you want!
If you are ready to learn how to create compelling stories in your artwork, make critical editing decisions, and understand the importance of focal points and supporting roles, then THE ART OF CHARCOAL with Robert is for you! By following Robert's detailed process, you'll gain the skills to add depth, value, and personal style to your drawings, whether it's a portrait or a still life. This course will equip you with the confidence and techniques to draw anything you desire with precision and creativity. By the end of this class, you'll be a more skilled draftsman and designer, enabling you to create more successful and impactful artwork!

MEET ROBERT KELLEY - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR
Rob Kelley is a fine artist/illustrator with a focus on portraiture! He lives in Stockton, California, and is a single dad to three children. Rob studied graphic design at UC Davis and then went on to study illustration at Academy of Art in San Francisco. Although he has had an extensive education in art, he abandoned it for most of his adult life. That changed in 2014, when his life hit a dramatic shift. At that time, he began looking at why he was in a constant state of low-level unhappiness and discovered that he had abandoned his true and authentic self. He knew that the one thing he needed that had been missing was art! Since then, Rob has adopted a sink or swim mentality! He now creates full-time as an artist. He also offers online courses through Kara Bullock Art School. To give back to his community, Rob offers a FREE workshop every Wednesday night at The Catalyst in downtown Stockton. It is his desire to help others find the joy in creating!
