DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS
In this expressive and energizing course with Emma Petitt, you'll embark on a journey that begins with the raw, emotional foundation of gesture drawing. Through timed exercises, you'll learn to capture the movement and spirit of the figure, letting go of perfection in favor of creative intuition. From there, you'll evolve your sketches into full paintings—adding layers of pattern, experimenting with stencils, and infusing your work with bold color and personality. Emma encourages you to push boundaries, trust your instincts, and embrace expressive exaggeration.
As the course progresses, you'll dive into composition, pattern, and the art of using negative space to create visual intrigue. You'll explore how canvas size, pose, and motif can shape your piece into something striking and personal. In the final lesson, you'll focus on statement-making figures, designing imaginative textiles and integrating surrounding elements with confidence and intention. To wrap it all up, a bonus full timelapse painting offers an inspiring look into Emma’s entire process—from the first sketch to the last mark—giving you a complete view of how everything ties together in a bold, story-filled portrait.

MEET EMMA PETTIT - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR
I am a British artist now living in Southern Spain, where I first took up painting nearly ten years ago after making the move. I paint bold, elongated, and exaggerated female figures—often with oversized hands!—and have become best known for my series of “Babe” paintings. These instantly recognizable figures frequently carry a distinct retro beach, poolside, or summer vibe.
My work is always infused with fun, positivity, body confidence, and humor. I build each piece with bright, colorful, patterned underpaintings, using multiple layers of stencils that play an integral role in the final image. It’s always a balancing act to decide which patterns to reveal and which areas to paint over. I lean into gesture and abstraction to keep my work fluid and alive, while texture, surface pattern, and imagined textile design are essential elements in my figurative style. A self-taught acrylic artist, I now sell my work globally and teach my techniques both online and at in-person art retreats across Europe. I create from my rural studio in Spain, nestled among olive and almond trees, where I live with my seven rescue dogs and care for abandoned puppies as a foster for several local dog charities.

Keep in mind, teachers are only active the first four weeks. After that, some may be involved, while others are not. We are looking forward to seeing your artwork!

Emma is absolutely sparkling! I enjoyed working alongside her and I took in so many new ideas! her encouragement to use bright colors was inspiring . My art had gotten bit dark (in tone) the past few years and I actually had to go to the art supply store to get pink and bright green and orange. The techniques of layering, new texture ideas, and playing with posca pens were all fun and playful and really put some eye candy in my pieces. Thank you! I will join in the fun in future workshop for sure!
