Along the way, we’ll explore lost and found edges, composition, design, and the art of editing to create compelling, expressive portraits. Through three engaging lessons, you'll paint a distinguished gentleman with a tie, a striking 3/4 view of a woman, and a captivating female portrait with a partial figure. Each session takes you through my full process, from the initial sketch to the final details. We’ll begin with drafting, the foundation of every successful portrait. I’ll draw alongside you, demonstrating how to establish strong proportions and relationships before moving forward. Even as we explore values and color, I will continue to emphasize the importance of this foundational step. Understanding value is crucial before introducing color, and we will focus heavily on how light and shadow create form and realism. We’ll also explore the role of edges, learning how lost and found edges create softness and movement in a portrait. In addition, we’ll discuss composition and design, focusing on how to edit and simplify elements in your reference for a compelling final piece. Finally, we’ll work with color application, building up hues in a way that enhances structure and depth without overworking the portrait.

The course is structured around three engaging lessons, each guiding you through the full process from initial drafting to final touches. The first lesson will feature a portrait of a gentleman with a tie, focusing on structure and values. The second lesson will be a 3/4 view portrait of a woman, where we will explore edges and composition. The third lesson will introduce a female portrait with a partial figure, allowing us to incorporate color and refine our design choices.  This is going to be a fun and insightful learning experience where you'll gain a deeper understanding of my personal process while developing confidence in your own.  Hope to see you in class!

MEET ROBERT KELLEY - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR

Robert Kelley Headshot
I am Rob Kelley and I am a fine artist/illustrator with a focus on portraiture! I live in Stockton, California, and am a single dad to three children. I studied graphic design at UC Davis and then went on to study illustration at Academy of Art in San Francisco. Although I have had an extensive education in art, I abandoned art for most of my adult life.   That changed, 4 years ago, when my life hit a dramatic shift. At this time, I began looking at why I was in a constant state of low-level unhappiness and discovered that I had abandoned my true and authentic self. I knew that the one thing I needed that had been missing was art! Since then, I have adopted a sink or swim mentality!  My main focus is portrait and figurative work, but I also enjoy exploring other subject matter such as landscapes, animals, and still life.
