Description

Remember that feeling of freedom and relaxation that comes with being on vacation? It's a time to escape the daily routine, live in the moment, and let go of your worries!

Join Kristy Kensinger in GREETINGS FROM, a course where she captures the essence of travel and daily life through painted portraits and scenes, offering insights on how to reflect these moments in your own artwork.  In this course, students will gather memories and ideas to craft a narrative behind each portrait. Moving beyond just painting faces, we will learn to create settings, backgrounds, and moments that narrate a person's story. Inspired by both real and dreamt-of destinations, Kristy seamlessly merges travel settings with portraiture, focusing primarily on the enchanting Italian coastline. However, students are encouraged to choose any inspiring destination or moment in time. Together, the class will work on expressive, fluid sketches and paintings that transcend mere portraiture, telling compelling stories by using vibrant colors to capture the essence and vitality of both person and place. Drawing inspiration from travel photography, we will develop backgrounds that transport viewers to different destinations, creating a captivating blend of portrait and landscape.  This course is going to be a ton of fun!  We hope to have you join us for this adventure in art!

DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

This course will begin with a focus on creating a vision board. Students will get an exclusive look at how Kristy crafts her vision boards and the reasons behind her choices. This foundational step will guide the design style, color scheme, and overall artistic approach for future projects.  After that, we will move into the first main project, an upside down portrait.  Students will step out of their comfort zones by exploring an unconventional technique: creating an upside-down portrait sketch using just one color. This method, favored by Kristy, challenges participants to view a face from a fresh angle, simplifying the analysis of shapes and structure.

Next, students will move beyond creating portraits to delve into the stories behind the individuals depicted. Kristy will focus on the enchanting Italian coastlines, infusing her lessons with a summer essence. However, students are encouraged to explore any direction that piques their interest. The goal is to encapsulate a journey within these snippets of time, creating artworks that feel like postcards from different moments and places.

In lesson four, students will explore how to create light and form using color. Focusing solely on colored pencils, we will streamline the process while introducing a diverse range of colors. Through the incorporation of line work and color variation, students will craft a detailed portrait. Unlike the earlier lessons, this session will emphasize spending more time on intricate details to enhance the final piece.  Next, students will explore fresh approaches to composition and background concepts. Rather than relying on a single photograph, Kristy encourages blending portraits with diverse backgrounds. The process involves sketching a portrait and placing it in different settings, which can be helpful for those unsure of what background to use. Students can experiment by cutting out a person from a magazine and pasting them onto various backgrounds, enhancing the piece with mixed media. Alternatively, they can digitally overlay their portraits on different background designs, offering a versatile approach to artistic composition.

In the final lesson, students will merge their drawing, painting, background, and pattern design skills to create a comprehensive portrait. The focus will be on moving beyond conventional portrait colors, introducing a variety of hues to develop unique artistic styles. This lesson encourages students to let their storytelling take form, resulting in a distinctive and personal piece of art.

MEET KRISTY KENSINGER - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR

Kensingers

Since a young age, I have traveled across the nation and globe. My travels sparked an internal passion in me that will never subside. When not on the go, I find myself continually researching different cultures. The textiles, patterns, cuisine, and artisans worldwide inspire my artwork and teaching. I love the lessons and unpredictability that travel brings to my life. Each experience is reflected in my artwork and teaching.

I started my career as a freelance graphic designer and then made the transition back to my art and teaching. I studied at the University of Colorado, Boulder graduating with a BFA in Fine Arts and Art History and an emphasis in Digital Arts. When I am not creating, you can find me chasing my kids outside, going on field trips, practicing yoga, hiking, or seeking adventure in travel.
