From Procreate to Paint is a two-part course with Christine Cavataio that guides you through creating a custom reference image in Procreate and then painting it from start to finish. In Part 1, you'll learn how to choose a compelling subject, build a strong composition, and use contrast, value, and color to design an image that tells a story. Christine walks you through Procreate basics and shows how to combine and edit multiple photos to create a reference that feels entirely your own. You'll complete creative exercises that help you explore digital tools and build confidence in your design choices.

In Part 2, the focus shifts to painting as Christine takes you step by step through the entire process—starting with surface prep and transferring your image, all the way to adding subtle details and final touches. You'll learn how to block in shapes, blend skin tones, control values, and build a dynamic, layered painting. By the end of the course, you’ll not only finish a beautiful piece—you’ll also gain the tools and confidence to create original, intentional artwork from concept to completion.

DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

As you know by now, this course is broken up into two parts - basically two courses in one!

PART 1 - DESIGNING YOUR REFERENCE

In Part 1, Christine will guide you through the following steps:

  1. How to choose a subject that tells a story
  2. What makes a strong design (and what to avoid)
  3. Using contrast, value, and color stories to guide the viewer’s eye
  4. Procreate basics—perfect for beginners!
  5. How to pull together multiple photos to create an original, compelling composition

You’ll even complete 3 hands-on digital exercises, including:

  • Placing an ocean in a bottle (yes, really)

  • Creating dynamic reflections

  • Building your final painting reference from several photos

By the end of Part 1, you’ll have your own, custom-designed reference image ready to paint.  In the images below, you will see just one of the procreate exercises.  Learn how to make a clear empty bottle and reflection turn into a bottle full of the ocean!

PART 2 - PAINTING YOUR DESIGN

Now that you’ve created the perfect reference, Christine walks you through how to bring it to life in paint in Part 2 of this course.  Students will gain an understanding of the following in this part of the course:

  1. Start with setting up your surface, transferring your image, and blocking in values
  2. Follow along as Christine paints a stunning face—step by step
  3. Learn how to mix colors, blend seamlessly, and build dimension
  4. Finish with background effects like a glowing moon and soft translucency

You'll see exactly how she builds light, shadow, and subtlety—layer by layer—until the piece is complete.

 

By the end of part 2 of the course, you will will have a clear understanding of how to paint your reference photo from start to finish through Christine's teachings!

MEET CHRISTINE CAVATAIO - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR

I started painting and drawing at a very young age. I sold my first at age 14. Since then I won several awards in school and college. At art exhibits and recently 5 different global competitions.
I had a long career as an Art Director in the fashion industry which sidelined some of my painting but kept me in a creative field in order to support myself. In 2020 I went back to painting full time.
I have always loved to draw and paint. It’s been my passion and I found that I no matter what I did in life I would always come back to that. There was never any doubt for me what I would be doing the rest of my life since I was a kid.

There is a private FB group for this course.    Once you are signed up for the course, you can access the FB group where only you and other students signed up for the course will have access.  Keep in mind, teachers are only active the first four weeks.  After that, some may be involved, while others are not.  We are looking forward to seeing your artwork!
