MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE

In 2018, Ed was a featured artist in Let's Face It 2019. This is a year long portrait and figurative art class where you receive one lesson per week, for 50 weeks.  Ed created one, in-depth lesson for this course.  In this lesson, he shares, in-depth, how he creates a digital charcoal portrait in Procreate.  To take this course, you will need an iPad and the app, Procreate.  If you are in Let's Face It 2019, do not purchase this course as it is the same lesson!

LESSON DESCRIPTION

By the end of this course, students will have an understanding of the following concepts:

  • Creating a digital charcoal portrait, using the Procreate app on the iPad Pro
  • Basic introduction to the Procreate app on the iPad
  • Starting a drawing by blocking out the large shapes of shadow
  • Practicing observational skills through mirroring and rotating of the canvas to correctly see proportions and relationships of the shapes the make up the image
  • Refining the blocking to define the facial features
  • Playing back the drawing as a time lapse and exporting the final image file and timelapse video.

In this class I will be showing you one of the methods I use to draw digital charcoal portraits on the iPad, as well as some of the basics of what you need to know in order to be able to do it yourself, from preparing the reference image to drawing and exporting your image.

MEET ED BOLDERO - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR

EdBolderoHeadShot

I’m a British/Dutch figurative artist living and working in Los Angeles. My current work predominantly consists of digitally drawn and painted portraits. I also use traditional media, such as charcoal and graphite as well as clay for figurative portrait sculpture.

I was born and grew up in Asia and went to school and university in the UK. I hold a postgraduate degree in character animation from Central Saint Martins, London. I have a background in visual effects and photography and currently work as a lead visual effects artist for a major commercials and advertising post-production house in Los Angeles.

For me, art is a continuing process of improvement and development, further enhanced by studying with and learning from artists whose work and methods influence and inspire me.
