Are You Tired of Searching Pinterest for Inspiration? Are You Ready to Learn How to Create a Beautifully Composed Portrait From Your Own Photographs?
I am not a master artist, but I have studied in great length many artists of our time, both past and present, and have found that by understanding what makes a great portrait has really helped to guide my own journey as a portrait/figurative artist. One common thread that I have found over and over again in each of my studies is that a successful portrait usually begins with a well-constructed plan. Are you ready to learn how to create a plan that will lead you to a well-composed, beautifully-designed portrait? Then this is the class for you!
COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of this course students will have an understanding of the following concepts:
- Explore what inspired master artists, past and present
- Where to find inspiration in your own surroundings
- Learn how to create a plan for an artwork from start to finish
- Set the stage for taking a photograph
- Manipulate a photograph to help with design and composition
- Play with color in your images, and mix paint colors to match
- Learn techniques that masters used to help with scale or proportion
- and so much more!
MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE
This course is for the artist that is ready to begin using his/her own images as his/her own inspiration. You DO NOT need to be a photographer to take this course. Students will need an iPhone or iPad to use the app MobileMonet, which is a big part of the course.
This course has a total of seven lessons. This course is really about finding your own inspiration and continuing to develop your own style and body of work.
This purpose of this course is more than following along with an art lesson as many of you are used to with the classes on our site. The desired outcome for this course is to really help you start finding your own inspiration through your surroundings and environment to kick start a whole new art journey. This course will include downloadable worksheets to guide your learning and thinking. Each week, we will have a subject to study, and a task to complete.
DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS
LESSON 1 - STUDY OF MASTERS - PAST AND PRESENT
Lesson one will focus on studying a few masters from the past and present. We will learn more about where inspiration came from, techniques they used in their process, palettes used when painting, and so much more. This study will be a great gateway into finding out ways that you might find inspiration that has been right in front of you all along. You will also be excited to learn more about techniques that EVEN the masters used to help them with their portraits!
We will be studying masters such as Vincent van Gogh, Jean Michel Basquiat, Guy Denning, Jenny Seville, and others. We will look at where they find/found inspiration, how they practiced their skill, color palettes, and more! You will then do your own research to find artists that you find inspiring, and how you can use elements from your findings in your own artwork. I am excited to dig in!
(Artists clockwise from top left: Vincent van Gogh, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jenny Saville, and Guy Denning)
LESSONS 2 AND 3 - FINDING YOUR OWN INSPIRATION
In Lesson 2, I will guide you as you discover inspiration in your own day-to-day life. This lesson will give you various activities to complete to help you find inspiration in objects, landscapes, people, that you may not have found otherwise. This lesson is going to be such a fun activity with homework that you will keep you inspired all week long! Get ready to begin your own library of photo references!
For Lesson 3, we will be using the AMAZING app, MobileMonet! This app is currently for iPhones and iPads only. MobileMonet has a great feature that helps me to abstract images to inspire my paintings! So you will need some type of Apple device to complete this course. You will watch several videos as I manipulate my own photos to create new inspiration for my artwork! Watch out! This is ADDICTING!
LESSONS 4, 5 AND 6 - HOW TO BE A MASTER OF COLOR
Every master artist is a master at mixing color. However, no one becomes a master at mixing overnight! Mixing paints takes practice! In lesson 3 we will have several mixing exercises to help you become more comfortable with mixing color! We will start with the very basic primary colors. You will be so surprised at just how many colors you can create with a limited color palette! It really takes the pressure off!
After we practice some exercises, I will show you how I use PicMonkey to pull colors from my inspiration photos to help guide the palette that I will use in my own paintings. We will also cover the Zorn Palette which is one of my faves to use, especially in portraits! This is where I began in my own portrait paintings, and then slowly introduced colors as desired.
LESSON 7 - MODELING THE PROCESS
Yay! Now that we have studies the masters, learned techniques to use as tools, practiced taking and manipulating our own photos and exercised our mixing capabilities, it is time to take all of these skills and apply them! In lesson 7, you will follow along as I create a piece from beginning to end. I will first share with you how I planned the design for my photograph. Often an image will come to my mind, and then I will go wardrobe shopping for my models (usually my daughters). Next, I will have a photoshoot in an environment that is conducive to my idea. Sometimes it is just right at home! Next, I use MobileMonet to play around with my photos until I have just the perfect image! Last, it is finally time to choose my palette and begin my painting, or in some cases, my charcoal piece!! I can't wait to show you how this process works for me, and how it has helped me to get to the next stage in my own artwork! Then it will be your turn to take your own photos and create your own masterpiece inspired by YOU!!!

So well done! One of the best classes I’ve ever taken. Learning to use Enlight and PicMonkey is a game changer. I’ve struggled to mix colors and I’m finally getting somewhere. I need more practice, but it’s making sense, finally! The class is well organized and Kara is so accessible.

I was in two minds about doing this course, but I’m very glad I did it. It has been very useful and inspiring and has changed my creative “workflow”. I’ve identified some of the stylistic elements I appreciate most in Art and learnt about some very useful phone apps (which are simple to use). I really enjoyed the interaction on the Facebook page too.

This is the course I had been looking for. Kara shows you everything you need to know to create gorgeous portraits. I especially wanted to learn how to use apps to enhance my own photos, and this course walks you through it, step-by-step. Color mixing as well- it’s all there! It’s a great value and you won’t be disappointed!!!!

I loved this Create Like a Master course, Kara speaks in a way that her painting technique and approach can be easily assimilated, so I have learnt a lot after watching many videos and reading her explanations. All the available material is very useful and practical. It was my fourth course in her website and a strongly recommend her menu of courses.

Great class. I learned so much about color mixing and value. Her use of mobile monet and color palette work is invaluable. I paint with oils, but it was all applicable and Kara explains her process each step of the way. I highly recommend this class.
