Description
Looking for a New Way to Experiment with Charcoal, Texture, and Storytelling?
Charcoal and Grain, with Peta Harvey, is an immersive course that explores the expressive potential of charcoal on wood. Through two in-depth lessons—a still life and a portrait—you’ll discover how the grain of the wood impacts your technique and artistic choices. In the still life, you’ll select and refine references, layer charcoal to create depth, and use light, shadow, and composition to set tone and tell a story. The portrait lesson introduces color and guides you in capturing textures like fabric, leather, hair, and skin. You’ll also learn how to apply fixative and varnish to protect and enhance your finished pieces. Whether you're new to wood or looking to elevate your charcoal work, this course will help you build confidence, experiment with atmosphere, and bring emotion into your drawings. By the end, you’ll have the skills to create textured, dynamic artworks that reflect your unique artistic voice.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of this course students will have an understanding of the following concepts:
- Choose reference images that match your artistic vision

- Layer and blend charcoal for smooth transitions and depth
- Use light and shadow to build form and volume
- Draw directly on wood, working with its natural texture
- Render surface textures like fabric, leather, and skin

DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS
In the first lesson of Peta's course, you’ll create a detailed charcoal drawing of a well-loved pair of shoes, focusing on observing and capturing texture, form, and contrast. Using a grid, you’ll learn how to block in basic shapes and proportions with accuracy. You’ll explore a range of charcoal pencils to understand value control, and practice blending and lifting techniques to create highlights and surface detail. This lesson emphasizes the interplay of light and shadow to develop a realistic, expressive drawing, encouraging you to find beauty and meaning in everyday objects through careful observation.

The second lesson shifts to portraiture, where you’ll capture the human face with emotional depth and narrative elements. Building on techniques from the first lesson, you’ll refine your approach to shading, texture, and layering to create rich shadows and soft gradients. You’ll experiment with white charcoal for highlights and volume, and incorporate symbolic props or subtle color accents to enhance storytelling and visual interest. This lesson challenges you to go beyond likeness, encouraging you to consider character, mood, and your own artistic voice in the final piece.

MEET PETA HARVEY - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR

Hi, I’m Peta Harvey—a visual artist based in Brisbane, Australia. My creative journey began with ceramics and painting on big, bold surfaces like platters and large forms. I went on to complete a Diploma of Art at the Australian National University in 2003, and since then, my creative path has shifted more toward drawing, which is where I feel most at home these days.
I’m passionate about capturing facial expressions and the subtle personality of a subject. Pencil is my go-to medium—graphite, charcoal, pastel, and coloured—but I also love experimenting with watercolours, acrylics, and mixed media. I enjoy the contrast between the control of drawing and the spontaneity of looser, water-based materials – it keeps things fresh and dynamic.
I choose my subjects based on emotional connection or character, always aiming for a realistic likeness while leaving visible marks and strokes that reflect the hand of the artist. I like playing with the tension between realism and suggestion—what’s finished and what’s left open.
Teaching is a recently discovered passion. I share my love of graphite and pencil through drawing lessons at a local art store and the occasional private lesson. I also teach online to connect with a wider audience. Helping people grow in confidence and creativity through drawing has become one of the most fulfilling parts of my practice.
