DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

First of all, I want you to know that this course is not about drawing the portrait, it is ALL about PAINTING THE PORTRAIT.  So, you will want to have a good understanding of drawing the portrait prior to taking this course.  You are also welcome to use a projector, or grid out your portrait, so that you can get through the drawing part quickly.

This course will begin by discussing composition.  Our first lesson will explore choosing a good reference photo to work from.  Not all references are good options for paintings.  We will also explore how to create an interesting design/composition from a good reference.  Next, we will delve into value.  You will learn what value is, and why it is so important to understand value when creating representational art.  After that, we will paint a black and white portrait that focuses solely on value.  You will become an expert on value so that we can move into color with ease.

Once we are comfortable with value, and creating a black and white portrait, it will be time to explore color!  We will begin with some color theory, and then move into mixing paint to match our colors.  Various reference photos will be accessible for you to practice along.  Watch as I demonstrate my process of finding the perfect match using a primary palette!  I walk through this process with several photo references using a diverse group of individuals.  This will help you to become a master mixer!  You can also use these lessons to create a beautiful inspiration board to collect for and inspire future projects!

Once you build up some confidence in your color mixing skills, we will explore brushes, and loading your brush with paint.  Finally, it will be time to paint a portrait in color.  Follow along as I share all of my thoughts and process as I paint a color portrait from start to finish.  I have a lot of doubts in the beginning, but I push through, and feel good about the outcome.  I am excited to share this experience with you, and think you will feel as if you are right in the studio with me!

I can’t tell you just how happy I am that I took this class. Color mixing is something that I struggle with and Kara took some of the mystery out of that for me. She uses a limited palette and that has helped me a lot. Her thin layer upon think layer painting approach was very informative and has helped me even with painting in oils. Kara makes everything so easy to follow and understand. I highly recommend this class!

  2. mesteve (verified owner)

This is a very practical and clear class. Kara is very responsive in the group and answers students’ questions clearly and quickly. I appreciate her information on using all the tools at our disposal including apps and projectors and demystifying a lot of her process. I highly recommend!

  3. Francie Gannon

I took this class a while ago but I will say I learned a lot and now, even later, I can say I love what I created in Kara’s class. The painting hangs in my great room and I still love it! I particularly enjoyed using the app and learning the zorn palette. I made up a palette of all the colors and I frequently use that palette to check colors and decide on what colors to use for the flesh tones. This is a great class and I think you too will learn a lot if you take it!

  4. Kathy Lewis

I love all of Kara’s classes and this may be my favorite! I always experience growth when spending time learning from her. She is warm and generous and spot on in her constructive guidance. I highly recommend this class. In fact,l I hope to take this class again!

  5. Lynn ahurley

After years of self curating many art classes, I found this class and purchased it a few years ago. It was a game changer for me. It helped me map out and solidify my voice. Kara is hands down is one of my favorite instructors. Her approach to teaching her technique is magical, organized and easy to follow. Seriously, she is the best teacher! I also love her down to earth , you do you approach.
I’ve rewatched the class many times.
As a matter of fact, I reviewed the class last night as I am creating another black and white portrait.
I’m grateful she put this class together and shared her wisdom in creating amazing portraiture. I’ve recommended this class in particular to several artist friends.
    Kara ROCKS!

One of the best classes I have taken part in. My portrait painting took a big leap forward, and I have integrated many of Kara’s tips and techniques into my ongoing practice. Kara is an engaging and encouraging teacher and I highly recommend this class for anyone interested in portrait painting.

Kara articulates the steps from blank canvas to beautiful likeness so clearly. I feel so much more confident painting faces now!
