Discover how to bring your portrait ideas to life in this 4-day (one day online, three in-person) acrylic painting workshop with artist and instructor Kara Bullock. You’ll begin by exploring creative ways to develop your own reference images using a variety of apps, then move through the process of designing, drafting, and painting your portrait on canvas.
Along the way, you’ll learn how to mix color, build your painting in layers, and use expressive marks to create a portrait that balances looseness with realism.
Perfect for artists looking to expand their creative process, explore new tools, and grow their confidence with portrait painting, this workshop will give you plenty of hands-on practice, guidance, and inspiration. You’ll leave with new techniques, fresh ideas, and a process you can continue using in your own work at

Day 1 – January 15 via Zoom
10:00 – 1:00 – Zoom
The workshop begins with a half-day, online, dedicated to learning how to use a variety of apps to create and edit imagery. You will learn how to generate, edit, and manipulate imagery to use as references for your portrait. Kara will guide you through her process for shaping ideas, refining compositions, and preparing images that inspire exciting paintings.
Day 2 – February 5
9:00 – 3:00 – Workshop
You’ll begin to explore design, composition, and drafting on Day 2, learning how to plan a successful portrait. Kara will also show you how she uses tools such as a projector and poster-sized prints to assist with composition and scaling—helpful guides that support your drafting skills. We will also begin painting today.
Days 3 and 4 – February 6-7
9:00 – 3:00 – Workshop
Days 3 and 4 focus entirely on painting. You’ll build layers, develop form, work with color, and create a portrait that feels alive and expressive. Kara will work closely with you as you paint, offering demonstrations, guidance, and personalized feedback.
Important Note About Imagery
In this workshop, students will not be working from Kara’s images. Students will be creating their own original images using various apps learned during day 1. This ensures that every artist arrives with personal, unique references that reflect their own ideas, style, and creative direction. There may or may not be free trials for these apps, so please look into cost prior to signing up for the workshop as these are required.
