WHERE THE WILD THINGS GLOW
Where the Wild Things Glow invites you to explore animal portraiture through color, curiosity, and layered mixed media. Across two complete projects, Jen Singh guides you from textured beginnings to final expressive marks.
You’ll build a luminous fox on wood panel through glazes and scratching, then shift to paper for a fast, fluid hare using watercolor and bold linework. Along the way, you’ll master lost-and-found edges, energetic surfaces, and knowing when a painting is truly complete—discovering how materials and marks carry feeling far beyond a likeness.

Course Description
BUILD A FOUNDATION
Prep a substrate with gesso texture, keeping the face smooth. Establish the composition and values with charcoal, then fix the drawing.
CREATE A COLOR STORY
Build a cohesive palette and confident workflow by selecting transparent glazes, mixing custom fox tones, and swatching warm and cool colors.
EXPLORE GLAZING
Explore how to build form from dark glazes to light, then discover how to distress and re-mark the surface to create rich, expressive texture.
REFINE/STRENGTHEN
Experiment with techniques that help to reveal luminous underlayers. Learn to sharpen focal points and soft edges to bring your painting to completion.
BUILD DEPTH
Start with a loose sketch and a transparent warm wash. Block in cool shadows and warm lights, then scratch into the paint and add expressive linework to create rhythm.
BALANCE LIGHT/DETAIL
Refine the eye as the focal point while keeping the painting fresh. Ground the hare with rich shadows, then balance the composition with expressive marks, drips, and varied edges.

Meet Jen Singh.
Your guide on this journey.
Jen Singh is an artist based in Avondale Estates, Georgia, whose work is deeply inspired by nature, wildlife, and the emotional connections that bind us to the living world.
Her fascination with animals and the natural landscape began during a childhood spent exploring her grandmother’s blueberry farm and the shores of Lake Michigan. At fifteen, she discovered a passion for charcoal and pastel, later earning a degree in illustration from Kendall College of Art & Design.
Jen’s creative career has included illustration, graphic design, exhibit design, and art direction, along with meaningful leadership within Atlanta’s arts community. In 2014, she co-founded Garage Door Studio, a boutique gallery and creative space dedicated to supporting local artists and makers.
Working primarily in expressive watercolor and acrylic, Jen creates luminous, layered paintings that explore connection, care, belonging, vulnerability, and resilience. Through glowing glazes, expressive linework, and rich texture, she invites viewers—and students—to reconnect with something essential in the living world we share.
In this course, Jen brings that same sense of wonder to the teaching process, showing you how thoughtful structure and creative freedom can coexist within a single painting.
