MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE

Textiles have always been part of the history of mankind, a necessity and a luxury, a global industry in fashion and art, something that is ever evolving.  In this workshop I will help you develop your visual skills and explore different ways of using fabrics, fibers and tools to develop your own textile art ideas.  After being introduced to the nature and context of textiles, you will go on to basic sewing skills, soft sculpting and manipulation techniques to create textile sculptures. You will also be introduced to collage and painting techniques in fabric sculpting.  On completion of the lessons you should have gained sufficient skills and enough confidence to explore your own techniques and styles in textile sculpting.

DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

INTRODUCTION TO PATTERNS AND TEXTILES

In this first lesson you will be introduced to the nature and context of textiles and how this relates to the course.  We will draw and make patterns from images.  We will also spend time researching animals and their anatomy in order to draw/design your own pattern pieces to make the soft bodies that we will be creating in later lessons.  By researching different animals we can learn more about their body make up, which will give us ideas on how to create various animal sculptures!

LESSON 1 - SARDINES

SardinesVeronkiaHanging

We will warm up by experimenting with a range of conventional and unconventional mediums. We will become more aware of the similarities between sewing and using textiles in art.  We will make a variety of sardine fish in this lesson.  Beginning with a soft sculpture technique and learning how to harden and seal the fabrics will set the stage for our future sculptures.  We will learn how to apply various mixed media techniques with a a variety of haberdashery and craft materials to our sculptures.  These techniques will help to create beautiful and interesting creations.

LESSON 2 - AFRICAN ELEPHANT

Next we will move on and learn how to manipulate different textiles and fibers in a unique wrapping style to create interesting patterns and dimension. I will also demonstrate for you how to create a pattern, cut out the pieces, sew together the body parts, and then assemble them together to create your animal. We will apply different mixed media techniques to the sculpture as well as how to harden and seal the fabrics for a lasting effect.  Choose your own color palette and fabrics to create something special and unique to your liking!

LESSON 3 - TEXTILE RABBIT

VeronkiaRabbit

Next, we will move into creating a rabbit sculpture!  We will discover how to combine conventional art materials such as clay & paints with textiles to create animal figurines. I will be sharing with you how to create a rabbit, but you could definitely take this lesson and create so many different animal figurines!  The sky is the limit!!  We will experiment with basic air dry clay armatures and sculpting techniques when we create the rabbit head. For this lesson we will also be using recycled materials, such as plastic bottles!!  So you can feel good about creating something beautiful that is good for the environment!

FINAL LESSON - MIXED MEDIA COLLAGE

Not only can you make amazing sculpture pieces with textile and fibers, but you can also create really beautiful mixed media collage pieces!  In our final lesson together you will discover how to use fabrics and fibers to create a mixed media painting on a canvas sheet.  This will include basic machine stitching techniques, but if you are uncomfortable using a sewing machine, you can also hand stitch your work!   Lastly, you will walk away with new ideas on how to use conventional art materials and mixed media paintings in your artwork.

MEET VERONIKA OLIVIER - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR

Veronikaheadshot

My name is Veronika Olivier. I am a South African living in a small town south of Johannesburg in a hundred year old house. My husband currently works in Botswana so I am constantly on the road between the two houses.

My studio is based at our home in South Africa from where I do most of my work. I am not an artist who is content to work in one medium or style; my work ranges from whimsical and folk art mixed media paintings, figurative portrait studies, expressive clay figures and elaborate textile sculptures.

I have been an artist all my life but have only practiced it full time for the last 4 years. My inspiration comes from visual experiences, memories and imagination. As an avid recycler I use things from around the home, including plastics, old clothes, boxes, tea bags, etc. I source materials from second hand and charity shops, textile waste from designers and gather anything I can get my hands on. There is nothing pre-planned about my processes. I rely entirely on my creative instinct.

My love for beautiful textiles and my constant curiosity to explore new things evolved into the birth of my extraordinary mixed media textile creatures. My ideas change and develop as the work progress and I allow each piece to evolve and take on a life of its own. Every character has a name and a story.
At the moment I enjoy sculpting and focus on my textile creatures and clay figures which is often combined with found objects.
