DESCRIPTION OF COURSE

This course will focus on drawing three different portraits in various poses.  Robert will begin by sharing about the reference photos he chose, and what he was drawn to.  After that, he will share his process from start to finish on each portrait, but more importantly, you will hear his every thought as he approaches each portrait with specific techniques and intentional marks.   This is Robert's most methodical course to date!  You will discover new and exciting ways to make marks in your work, and also how to create interest using a shorter range in value.  Throughout these videos, you will feel as though you are sitting in the studio, watching him create a beautiful piece of art, and you will know exactly how he arrived at the final piece!

*This is not a live workshop.  All lessons are prerecorded.

MEET ROBERT KELLEY - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR

RobertKelley

I am Rob Kelley and I am a fine artist/illustrator with a focus on portraiture! I live in Stockton, California, and am a single dad to three children. I studied graphic design at UC Davis and then went on to study illustration at Academy of Art in San Francisco. Although I have had an extensive education in art, I abandoned art for most of my adult life.   That changed, 4 years ago, when my life hit a dramatic shift. At this time, I began looking at why I was in a constant state of low-level unhappiness and discovered that I had abandoned my true and authentic self. I knew that the one thing I needed that had been missing was art! Since then, I have adopted a sink or swim mentality!

Thank you so much Robert/Kara for producing this course. It provided for me something I would likely never have been able to do: Look over Robert’s shoulder while he worked. Needless to say, my cup is full (of wonderful things) and now it’s back to the drawing board. – Steve.

Robert not only did it again, he really topped himself. All of his classes are a must, but this course gives insights into the decisions he makes. This is not just a how to draw class, it’s an entry way into fine art.

What a brilliant, brilliant course. Robert is a fantastic teacher and I leant so much during this and I especially loved when he discusses the thoughts and insight when making decisions . Highly recommend this to anyone interested in charcoal.

I found this course to be transformational for me. I ENCOURAGE MORE COURSES FROM ROBERT. I suggest another FIGURES COURSE. I suggest a LANDSCAPE COURSE. What were the big rocks in this course? 1) it’s ok to go REALLY SLOW. I’ve been mesmerized by fast art, madcharcoal etc… His PACE taught me something, and really yanked up the quality of my work. 2) His advice to not overly commit early on, to allow the piece to grow naturally, to allow freedom to make decisions later, to not be jammed into a path. 3) never worked with brushes, or charcoal powder before. Or acetone…or foam brushes. He’s brought me completely new tools. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS TEACHER.

  5. Rose Cameron

Robert is an amazing instructor both in person and online! I cannot recommend his classes enough!!! He will literally change your art for the better – plus he’s an awesome human all around. I recommend all of his courses here on KB Art!
