Description

Are you frustrated with color mixing and understanding which colors to use in your portraits?

I was, too!  That is why I started experimenting with a limited palette this year, and using a more painterly style of painting!  I found that the combination of palette, and large brush strokes, had such a beautiful effect and the limited number of supplies needed!  I quickly fell in love with this method!  If you would like to learn some very simple techniques to create a beautiful, vibrant series of work, with a limited paint palette, then this is the course for you!  I hope to see you in class!

MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE

This course is taking a scaffolding approachEach lesson will build on the last, and what you have learned so that by the end of the course, you have a firm foundation to move forward in your own portrait work.

DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

LESSONS 1 AND 2 - COMPOSITION AND DESIGN

In Lesson 1, we will discuss the characteristics of a strong, cohesive series of art work.  This can take careful though and cohesion of elements.  We will study past series of my artwork to give you some ideas!

The composition of your artwork is important!  Composition is how you communicate your ideas to the viewer.  There are rules in composition, but again, you can always do what works for you.  In Lesson 2, I will cover a few brief points in composition before we begin playing with our own reference photos.  For this lesson, we are going to discuss perspective, light, color, texture, space and proportion.

LESSON 3 and 4 - TONING AND COLOR MIXING

Lessons 3 and 4 will prepare you for painting your portraits!  You will learn about toning your canvas, and which colors make for a great background.  We will then begin our study of the Zorn Palette.  This has been a great introduction to color mixing for me!  What has amazed me most, is just how many colors you can get from just four colors!  The limited palette consists of red, yellow, white and black.  We will begin by creating our own color chart, by mixing these four colors in different ways.  You will follow my lead and end up with an amazing chart to refer to throughout the remainder of this course!

LESSONS 5 THROUGH 9 - CREATE

When we create our art in a series, rather than a series of "onesies" we help our viewers to understand better what we are about!  In our final lessons, we will bring it all together and begin creating a series of work.  Why work in a series?  There are a myriad of reasons why, but according to Artbusiness.com,  "The knowledge and experience you gain from working within a well-defined set of parameters, while expressing yourself from a range of different perspectives within those parameters, allows you to nuance your compositions more subtly, purposefully and in greater depth and detail, and to communicate the results of your observations and explorations in more impactful, compelling and consequential ways. In other words, you're able to more convincingly get your point across and to more profoundly connect with your audience (http://www.artbusiness.com/artists.html)."

Pixelated Portaits is a must, if you have been searching for your style. Taking this course helps you to focus on a series, which includes creating a color scheme that will speak to you as well as the opportunity to develop several paintings that feel cohesive. By participating in this course, I found my courage, my dramatic art story, and my contemporary style that I have been searching for.

  2. Donna Lynd

Loved! Loved this course. The limited palette opened new ideas for skin tones and the pixelation was a new way to build a painting. Kara was responsive to any questions and so supportive with her positive feedback.

  3. Lydia Bee (verified owner)

I have never painted faces at all and Kara made it so easy to understand and develop as I worked through the lessons. Loved this class and Kara as a teacher.

  4. Karen McDonald (verified owner)

I loved this class and painted around six women in this style, a kind of series. I would recommend pixilated portraits to anyone interested to adding depth to portraits. I still use it when I paint, I sometimes cover
it, and use it for texture and interest in the face, neck and even in some of the clothing. I love its versatility

  5. Barbara DeGrande (verified owner)

This is an incredible course! A great way to learn about color and with five different lessons, this is a GREAT bargain. I went from painting my first canvas to completing FIVE in this one lesson. Each one showed improvement and helped me embark on a whole new type of painting.
