Description

Are You Looking to Find More Freedom in the Creative Process?  Do You Feel Excited, or Scared, at the Idea of Creating without a Plan?

Join Justin Wheatley in Mixed Media: Urban Cityscapes, where you will learn to combine a variety of mediums to create unique artwork that will intrigue any viewer.  Justin has a love for photography, and for painting.  In this course, he will combine his love for both into a simple, accessible process that anyone can imitate.  You will explore coming up with interesting photographs, and creating transfers of those to use in your pieces.  These photos will be a springboard that will inspire the direction of your art.  The freedom of beginning your artwork without a plan, and finding your way home, is a process that Justin enjoys.  In this course, he will inspire you to find your way home, again and again, by creating unique, urban cityscape artworks full of line, color, geometric shape, and more.  Justin will teach you that the possibilities in creating are endless. We hope to see you in class!

DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

This course is comprised of two main projects.  Both lessons will show you how to complete a mixed media urban cityscape from start to finish. You will learn the easiest and best way to apply collage materials to a panel. Justin discusses varieties of paper that work well and those that don’t, and what can be used to adhere the materials in the most efficient way.  You will also learn to transfer your photo using simple and effective techniques. Justin gives tips on printers and shares what he has learned about the transfer process.

After the transfer process is complete, it is time to move on to the most exciting part of the art!  Justin lets the new artwork inform where he adds paint.  In this lesson you will learn best practices for planning how you will add paint to your composition.   Once you have planned your composition, it is time to apply the paint. Justin teaches his techniques on masking and painting onto the surface of the photo transfer.  He will also share how he makes informed decisions when he is stuck, or trying to decide what to do next.

COURSE SUPPLIES

Below is a list of the supplies that I will be using for the projects in this course.  However, you are always encouraged to use what you have on hand.

Substrates

  • Panels such as Ampersand, Da Vinci, or Blick artist wood panels in your choice of size

Paints

  • Paint. I use many different brands of paint, all of which are acrylic. Once the transfer is done, acrylic or oil may be used.  Nova paints are my favorite.

Brushes

  • Any preferred brushes or tools used for applying paint.

Other

  • Collage materials (no glossy papers like magazine pages)
  • Printed photos (printed on regular bond paper, such as copy paper)
    • these are photos that make up the primary composition
    • the photos should be flipped horizontally because the transfer will result in a mirror image
    • should be printed the size of the surface you are covering
  • Gel medium. Any gel medium will work, my preference is Liquitex matte medium. This is used for the photo transfer and adhering collage materials. Mod Podge is an affordable and effective option if you don’t have gel medium.
  • Large brush (at least 1") for applying medium
  • Printmaking brayer
  • Misting spray bottle
  • Blow dryer
  • Low and high grit sandpaper
  • Hand held sander (not necessary, but helpful)
  • N-95 mask for sanding
  • XActo knife
  • Cutting pad
  • Metal ruler
  • Masking tape, 3/4 inch and 1/4 inch
  • Acrylic gloss varnish (Liquitex gloss varnish is my preferred brand). This is for a final coat on the finished work.
