DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS
In our first lesson, students will be introduced to the concept of simple shapes. A reference photo will be used to demonstrate how to identify simple shapes in a cityscape scene. Additional instruction will include an introduction to watercolor techniques which will provide the background for practice in painting loose, abstract shapes. Students will then examine those abstract shapes to discover how they can be developed into more concrete scenes.
Using the reference photo from lesson one, Lesson Two will introduce light and dark values and how to utilize comparative value in analyzing simple shapes in a cityscape. This lesson will demonstrate how to use this process to create the structure for a cityscape painting.
In this lesson students will be introduced to the concept of a five-value key and how color families relate directly to value structure. We will continue to build from previous lessons and apply color to the simple shapes as they relate to value.
Foundational to a cityscape scene is inclusion of the human form. In this lesson students will be introduced to appropriate proportion when painting figures. The lesson will also include instruction in painting in visual cues to promote viewer completion as well as how to represent figures in motion such as walking and running.
Lesson 5 introduces the concept of ‘entourage’ or adding supporting elements to a cityscape painting such as cars, busses, buildings, light poles, trees. Students will learn how to integrate the supporting elements into the scene using the concept of simple shapes.
In our final lesson, students will plan how they will interpret a cityscape scene into their own unique painting using simple shapes, values, and loose watercolor painting techniques.

MEET STEVE GRIGGS - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR
Steve's love of art started early in life. While other children would lament field trips to the art museum, that was his favorite day of the school year! Steve's mother bought his first 'real' watercolor set of six tubes of paint, when he was in elementary school and his love of watercolor was born. Growing up in a large family made finding time and space for painting difficult. Whenever possible Steve would steal away to the basement of his childhood home where he would paint but never show anyone what he had done. Steve remained a 'closet artist' until he attended Michigan State University and graduated with a degree in Studio Art. Steve later attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
With his unique, loose, moving, and evocative painting style, Steve’s paintings have been juried into a variety of national and international exhibitions and regularly win awards. Steve loves to guide other artists in learning to paint in his free and expressive style and he is a popular demonstrator, workshop instructor, and exhibition juror. Steve and his partner, Sue, have written numerous articles for publication in Watercolor Artist and The Artist Magazine (published in the UK).
Steve has gallery representation with Mirada Fine Art in Indian Hills, Colorado; Twisted Fish Gallery in Elk Rapids, Michigan; and J Petter Galleries in Douglas, Michigan.

Below is a list of the supplies that I will be using for the projects in this course. However, you are always encouraged to use what you have on hand.
Paint
I use Daniel Smith and M Graham almost exclusively (these are my favorites), Winsor Newton Cotman or Van Gogh watercolors will do. I often use Winsor Newton Cotman or Van Gogh for sketching and preliminary studies.
- Ultramarine Blue
- Cobalt Blue
- Manganese Blue
- Cadmium Red Light
- Cadmium Yellow Light
- New Gamboge OR Gamboge
- Burnt Sienna OR Paynes Gray OR Neutral Tint
- Cobalt Turquoise
- Quinacradone Gold
- Mars OR Lunar Black
- White Gouache
Brushes - the best quality you have or are able to purchase
- One round big, mop/quill-shaped
- One round pointed brush (sable or squirrel)
- One rigger or needle point for fine details and lines
- Small round brushes sized #8, 10, 12 (I like Escoda Versatil or Princeton Neptune or Da Vinci)
- 1” Flat
Paper
- Arches OR Fabriano 300 grams rough texture 140 lb. It is best to use 1/4 or 1/2 size sheet, but of course, you can paint in any size you feel comfortable. I will demonstrate on 1/4 and 1/2 size sheets.
- Sketchbook – Canson or Arteza Watercolor 9” x 12”
Misc
- Sponge (for drying rinsed brush)
- Palette
- Small pocket knife or palette knife for scraping in
- Tissues for lifting out
