Description

WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT DIFFERENT ART MATERIALS AND HOW THEY WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE BEAUTIFUL, COLORFUL ARTWORK?  ARE YOU READY TO ADD MORE COLOR TO YOUR WORK?

I love color!  I have always been drawn to big, bold color. When I paint, I want an unlimited color palette. In my paintings, I combine my love of color with my love of drawing the female face. Big eyes, full lips and wild hair are incorporated in most of my paintings. I want my paintings to emote joy and happiness.

To me, color equals emotion and expression. From the clothes you wear, to the color of your sofa, to the color you paint your walls, you express yourself with color. Equally, when you look at a painting, you can tell the mood of the artist simply by the color palette that the artist has chosen. Moody blues, fiery reds, calming soft tones or excited neon hues immediately draw you into a painting and set the tone for your experience with that painting.

I am so happy to share this experience with you all and look forward to seeing you in class!

DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

WARM-UP

A simple google search or spin around the color wheel will introduce you to a wide set of “rules” regarding color. However, in the immortal words of Douglas MacArthur, “Rules are mainly meant to be broken and are too often for the lazy to hide behind.” Breaking the color wheel rules are an integral part of developing your own style and color palette.

In my paintings I like to use a large range of color. Also, I tend to use every color of the rainbow in every painting. I also do not like to wait for paint to dry. When you are painting with a large color palette, there is one rule that I think you should know…..how not to make mud when mixing colors.

ALFOC WARM UP

LESSON 1 - COLORFUL COLLAGE

Project1

A lot of budding artists suffer from “Blank Canvas Syndrome.” What is that you ask? Well, have you ever looked at a blank canvas and felt a paralyzing fear of what your first stroke should be? That is “Blank Canvas Syndrome.” Seeing all the potential that a canvas holds can be quite frightening. Fear of making a “mistake” can keep you from starting the creating process.

I have found the easiest way to combat BCS is to throw as much paint at the canvas as possible with little regard to the end result. Start with your favorite colors and simply begin. Grab your favorite stencils and mark making tools and create. There aren’t any rules to follow. Use the paint colors you like. If you like neon colors, use them. If you like pastel colors, use them. Primary, jewel tones, whatever, let your heart and intuition be your guide.

The most important step is beginning. The completing will work itself out.

LESSON 2 - BEAUTIFUL HAIR GIRL

Faces are my favorite subject to draw. I love the feminine face and bringing them to life through my paintings brings me joy. No two faces are ever the same. Each painted face has its own personality just as in real life.

In this project, we use a blocking technique to create the shape of a head with big bold hair for our subject. After we paint her face, the background of the painting shines through the unpainted hair. Fun bits of the background show through the hair creating an illusion of dreams and thoughts floating around her head.

LESSON 3 - GIRL WITH ROOTS

Project3

I wanted to show you that drawing a full form figure could be both easy and visually striking at the same time. I love to draw girls in large dresses with a tree or flower inside the body of the dress. You can use the space of the dress to put in some little secret totem of something that is sacred to you.

BONUS - BALANCING ACT

Something special for you because I love you for being here and sharing yourself with me.  This final lesson is really just a playful lesson where we will bring it all together and create a final mixed media lesson!

This was a great class. Heather has a light and fun attitude. Her techniques were very easy to follow and the art from the students was fabulous.

  3. Debby Brady

This was one of my all time favorite classes. I completed several pieces, my granddaughter claiming the butterflies, and getting a commission piece using this method. I had so much fun with it and I highly recommend this class to everyone. Thanks!

  4. Joanne Gower (verified owner)

I loved this class. Color, color, and more color!! Made me so happy!! Heather is an excellent teacher. Her instructions were easy to understand and well explained, especially the color wheel. I hope she teaches more classes!! I have already used her technique to “fix” a watercolor painting I messed up. I am also going to use it on another painting’s background that is very boring. Great class!!

  5. Cathym30 (verified owner)

I thoroughly enjoyed this class. I completed all the lessons and loved all the pieces I created. Heather does a great job of demonstrating and explaining her techniques. Everyone in the Facebook group was so supportive and Heather was always available and encouraging. Would recommend the class to anyone who wants to learn about and play with colour.
