Join Tracy Everly, in her DEBUT online course - LAYERED MOMENTS - PAINTING THE STILL LIFE, where she shares key points of her oil painting process for creating a floral, still-life painting from direct observation. She will share her ideas about composing a still life, organizing what we see into an interesting composition, and premixing paint to start building color harmony. She will take you through the process of creating an underpainting and then laying in a first layer of color for two different paintings, one in cool light, and one in warm light. Next, she will continue to work on both paintings, refining, editing and introducing non-traditional painting tools that work in the service of what she sees. The concepts shared are relevant for work in all mediums, but instruction and most techniques are specific to oil paint.

DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS
To get started, we will draw a value map or plan. We will aim to limit the number of values we use and place what we see into one of those value groups. This is a way to organize what we see and start creating a strong value pattern as a composition for our painting. We will do this twice with two different still-life set ups.
The second and third lessons in each of our painting projects will be all about paint! In the second lessons, we will identify our paint colors as warm or cool. To get to know our paint better, we will mix each color with every other color. After that, we will premix colors for a painting. This is a way to start building color harmony and unity. We will refer to our value plan for our mixtures, mixing hues into four value families. Temperature will be considered as we make our mixtures.
During our final lessons we will begin our lessons with an underpainting. This is just one way that you can start a painting. Next, we will add the first layer of color to our painting. We will focus on laying down flat shapes of color from our premixed paint. To take the painting further, we will work over the first shapes of color we painted. We will explore what it means to continue to refine and edit shapes, edges, color and value choices, adding more subtlety and nuance as we go. This is about going deeper into discovering what the painting is meant to be.

MEET TRACY EVERLY - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR
Tracy Everly is an award-winning painter who lives in Bucks County. She has studied occasionally at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, but she is also largely self-taught, having put together her own educational path held together by dogged determination and love of art. She currently shows paintings at Morpeth Contemporary in Hopewell, New Jersey and has had work included in exhibitions throughout the United States. She has been painting and making art for more than 20 years.

This course will have a private Facebook group just for you! This course is a self-study, so the teacher may or may not be active in the group. However, students still sign up and you can see past and present work and comments.
COURSE SUPPLIES
Below is a list of the supplies that I will be using for the projects in this course. However, you are always encouraged to use what you have on hand. Links to specific products I use will be shared in class. You will have full access to this list once the course is purchased.
Floral Still Life Motif
- Flowers – Choose only one or two varieties in a limited color range
- Several vases, jars or other vessels of your choice
Surfaces
- I typically like to paint on a rigid, non-absorbent support. In this course I’ll be painting on a piece of unmounted oil-primed linen and on Ampersand Gessobord, both 10x10 inches.
Drawing Materials
You will need some form of drawing materials – just a sketchpad and a soft pencil will do. I typically use a soft Nitram charcoal and a soft Blackwing Matte graphite pencil on a good quality drawing paper. The drawing we will do is in preparation for painting, so nothing elaborate is needed.
Paint
Warm Colors
- (Opaque Yellow) - Cadmium yellow medium
- (Opaque Red) - Cadmium red light
- (Transparent yellow) - Transparent earth yellow
- (Transparent red) - Transparent earth red or transparent oxide red
- (Transparent green) - Sap green
- (Warm; Opaque yellow) - Yellow ochre
Cool Colors
- (Transparent blue) - French ultramarine
- (Transparent red) - Alizarin crimson or alizarin permanent
- (Transparent Green) - Phthalo green or viridian green (if you can't find phthalo)
- (White) - Titanium white
- (Opaque purple) - Violet grey (Daler-Rowney Georgian)
Medium
- I use Original Liquin but sparingly. I like its consistency and drying rate. I usually put a small amount out on my palette. I sometimes also use Gamblin’s Solvent Free Gel medium.
Thinner
- Odorless mineral spirits (such as Gamsol)
Brushes/Knives
- I use a range of different brushes, most of them bristle brushes. I tend towards larger sizes in flats and brights. It’s best to have a range from small to large and in different shapes. I like large brushes that are 1-inch wide or larger (I use a flat Blick Mega brush). I also like Blick Scholastic Wonder White brushes.
Palette/Painting Knives
- RGM Palette knife no. 80. You can use any painting or palette knife you like. I recommend a steel palette knife, 3" trowel with a deep bend in the handle.
Palette
- 12x16 gray palette. This can be gray-toned wood, glass or disposable gray palette.
Portable Easel
- I have a variety of easels that I use, depending on the circumstances. I currently use a tripod-based setup using a Leder Easel
Miscellaneous
- Rags or paper towels
- Viewfinder
- ValueComp - available from artworkessentials.com.
- Baby wipes- I use these quite a lot. They’re great for wiping off your hands while you work.
- Ettore squeegee
- Sherrill mudtool
- Brayer
