I am full of joy as I announce that Kate Thompson will be returning to my studio in Tustin, CA in March 2019!  In this workshop, Kate will show you how she has learned to push mixed media to its limit!  Over the past several years she has been through fearless experimentation and is ready to share all of the unique and mysterious techniques that she has discovered, with all of you!

Class Schedule:

Saturday, Day 1

  • 9:00 – 4:00
  • Kate will begin with a demo of how she experiments with a plethora of mediums to create expression and texture in her artwork.  Some examples of what you will see throughout the two day workshop include:
    • working with linseed oil, graphite and charcoal as well as watercolors, charcoal , a few acrylics, gesso and plaster (joint compound).
    • drawing with pencil, as well as needle, thread and wire.
    • collage using vintage book pages and image transfer techniques. A sample book will be created to build a vocabulary of marks, textures and techniques to add to our tool kit.
    • We will work on watercolor paper, vintage ledger paper, vintage fabrics and laces (check the vintage stores for a source of amazing fabrics to use).
    • Joint compound (pre-mixed plaster) will be added to create depth and texture.

Sunday, Day 2

  • 9:00 - 4:00
  • On day 2, Kate will begin the day with a demonstration.  Students will continue to learn about:

Important Information:

Supplies:

  • Vintage fabric and laces for collage elements
  • 11” x 17” or thereabouts watercolor sheets
  • Watercolors- I use mostly Daniel Smith watercolors but you can bring your own choices. A must is to have a yellow, red and blue. I use burgundy yellow ochre, English red earth, paynes gray, undersea green, ultramarine, cad red
  • Acrylics- I prefer Golden Open
  • Assorted brushes- ¼ angular Princeton Select nylon soft brush, assorted soft brushes for watercolor.
  • Assorted bristle brushes for the acrylics (if you are not familiar with the difference between the soft and bristle brushes email me, it is important to have the right type of brushes)
  • Embroidery floss or thread and needle for embroidery stitching
  • Pencil, mechanical pencil
  • Stabilo pencil - black
  • Gesso
  • Matte medium
  • Utility brush for applying the matte medium

***Extra Supply fee: $15. You get 2 pieces of vintage ledger paper, powered charcoal, numerous handouts, wire, joint compound, inks, linseed oil

  • Embassy Suites has a shuttle service that runs from 5am to 11pm.  Embassy Suites and Country Inn both offer complimentary breakfast.  Transportation is not included at Double Tree or Country Inn, but Uber and/or Lyft are affordable and used regularly.

 

Workshop Policies: Due to limited class size, payment is non-refundable, but may transferable, keep reading. If you purchase a workshop and are unable to attend, AND if there is a wait list for the course, we will put you in contact with the first person on the wait list for the workshop. If that person agrees, he/she can pay you for your spot in the course. Once that transaction is completed, we will substitute that person for your spot in the course. If you are unable to attend the workshop, and the workshop has not sold out with a wait list, we will not be able to refund your purchase.

 

Cancellations: If the event does not reach the minimum number of participants, workshop may be cancelled. In the very rare event of an emergency or unavoidable natural disaster or act of God, the class may be cancelled. If this is to happen, all purchased workshops will be reimbursed to students in full. If you are interested in a workshop that has sold out, please email Kara at karabullockart@gmail.com.  We will put you on a wait list and inform you if a space in the workshop opens.
