Join Kathy Lewis, aka KJ Allison in her very first online course - FAT AND HAPPY BIRDS! The focus of this course is to learn how to create crows, owls and birds with human faces, using air dry clay. I was first introduced to the wonder of paper clay a few years ago during an online course. Once I started playing with the clay, I could not get enough of creating with it! Four years later my interest has only grown and I am constantly trying to find new and exciting sculptures to create. There is a peace and joy that I experience when working with clay and I am hoping that, through my course, you will discover your own love for this amazing material. I am excited to share the methods both learned and developed so that you may experience the wonder of working with clay in an intuitive way!

- Create at least two types of legs using wire and masking tape
- Create bird and human faces (my way)
- Create eyes out of clay
- Create a crown
- Create an armature as a base for a clay bird
- Create an owl, crow, and bird with a human face using paper clay
- Sand and paint the finished clay figure
- Seal the completed figure

DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS
WARM UP - EYES AND FACES
Prior to beginning our main lessons of creating our special birds, we will have a few start up lessons where we learn how to make eyes and faces. We will begin by helping you prepare for making eyeballs (for the crow) and faces (for the owl and bird with human face). I will show you an easy way to make faces for your sculptures. It is a good idea to make several faces as samples to decide the features you like best. These are just practice faces so paint the faces freely. We will experiment with color. It is good to have several pairs of clay eyeballs on hand for making your birds. I keep a bowl full of them at all times. They make me happy!
LESSONS 1 - BIRD WITH HUMAN FACE
In your first sculpture lesson, we will start off by creating wire legs (used for all birds in this course) and an armature for your birds. You will apply clay to this armature. In addition you will learn how to sculpt a human face on your bird. You will learn how to paint the human face in a painterly fashion (have fun with color and details!). This lesson will give you a lot of opportunities to be creative! You can choose what type of ears to create, how to paint the face, and more! You will just love your little bird with a sweet, loving face!
LESSON 2 - CROW
In this lesson, you will learn how to create a handsome, clay crow! First, you will create a basic crow armature. I will show you how to make a body armature, and how to attach the head. You will apply paper clay to the crow (clay suit) and learn how to add texture to his body! After drying you will sand and paint the crow. Finally you will seal with spray sealer. The crow is such a handsome fella, and I know you will just love the crow that you create!
LESSON 3 - OWL
You have already learned how to create wire legs for birds, so you will be one step ahead for this lesson. In this lesson, you will learn how to attach the legs to a different armature form. This is a brand new position, the owl armature, and much different from the previous birds. We will follow all previously learned steps plus learn how to complete the owl’s royal, clay suit. You will love creating this owl! Not only will we add texture, but we will get creative with his feathers, to make it look like he has a king's robe on! He is just so regal, like real royalty!

MEET KATHY LEWIS - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR
I began taking online art classes, met Kara Strachan Bullock, and took almost all of the workshops she hosted at her local studio. I was in heaven to have this new friend and later her wonderful studio located less than 20 minutes from home! I also continued online courses and one had a particularly awesome affect on my art journey. It was taught by Jeanne-Marie Webb called "the soulbearers". I would never in a million years have expected to fall in love with sculpting clay! When working with clay I felt peace and joy unlike anything ever before experienced. I have not put it down in four years and continue to find great pleasure in creating with clay. It is my 'go to' art medium. I create purely from the heart having had no formal sculpting education and somehow I am afraid to pursue the art of sculpting in a formal way because I am afraid it would ruin the freedom with which I create. I hope to spread the joy of creating in clay, something that young and old, beginner and experienced can enjoy. I hope you can experience the feeling i heard in my granddaughter's comment recently when she said, "Grandma, I am so happy making this (clay sculpture). It is the most wonderful thing I have ever made."

This course will have a private Facebook group just for you! I will be actively involved with the class via Facebook during the four weeks that the course is open! I am really excited about working through these exercises with each of you!
COURSE SUPPLIES
Below is a list of the supplies that I will be using for the projects in this course. This list may appear long but you will have most of the items around the house and will only need to order a few things.
Clay
- Jovi Air Dry Clay in White or Gray (not red!)
Tools and Wire
- Wooden Sculpting Tools
- Feather wire texture tool (must have)
- Thinner craft wire in a color (can get at Michael’s)
- 18 and 20 ga steel galvanized wire: (very cheap, I wear rubber gloves with this)
- Richeson armature wire 1/16 inc (use this as alternative to galvanized wire listed above only if you think your hands will need a softer wire, bending can be hard work!)
- Wire cutter (crafty type, a really good one that cuts like butter is made by
- knipex, I have style 71 01 200 but they are expensive. Amazon has them but not needed, craft type will do)
- Needle nose pliers (small craft type)
Paint
- Permanent (waterproof) fine liner in size 0.2 or 0.5 or similar. I use UniPen but there are many other good brands
- Paint, any acrylic paint you like. I use golden in these colors:
- Titanium White
- Titan Buff
- Red Oxide,
- Raw Umber,
- Payne’s Gray,
- Yellow Oxide or Yellow Ochre,
- Iridescent Bronze (fine),
- Mars Yellow
- Black
- I am using shading gray (Golden High Flow Acrylic) a lot lately!
***Your paint can be heavy body or fluid but be sure you at least have white and black in fluid. A new color that I seem to use in EVERYTHING is Matisse Australian Ghost Gum, and I am also loving Jo Sonja’s olive and vermillion. These are the colors I am using but you do not need to get them all. Just use what you have.
Paint Brushes:
- Paint Brushes - Blick Scholastic brushes are cheap and work well, include detail and mid size. Here are some I like:
- Filbert size 12
- Bright size 8
- Round size1
- You might want a teen brush (size 0).
Other Supplies:
- Newspaper
- Small piece of sand paper ( 220 or 330 grit)
- Masking tape (lots, get a good sticky one, I use this)
- A few round tooth picks
- Paper towels and/or baby wipes
- Wax Paper
- Foil
- 2 large size zip lock bags
- Small fine mist sprayer for water
- Rubber gloves, the thin type if you can wear them
- Rolling pin or craft roller for clay or brayer roller
- xacto knife with blade
- Rubber gloves, the thin type if you can wear them
Note: Sometimes I like to use silicone face molds about 1 inch in size more or less but you don’t have to buy them. You can make a face easily without a mold.
OPTIONAL
- potters wheel is very helpful but not necessary: I use this one: https://www.dickblick.com/products/amaco-no-5-decorating-wheel/
- RUBBER STAMPS, if you have them, small stars, hearts, spirals, alphabets (I did not use in the demos but they are really fun to use when adding textures to your creations. I will show a sample)
- Dust mask (recommended for sanding)
- Face molds (really fun to use if making birds with faces but you can also make them without the molds)
NOTE: If you want to paint the legs of your birds you will need a primer and a color (I use black).
- Primer
- Black spray paint
- You may want a long rubber glove when painting the legs, makes it easier
- Winsor & Newton professional spray varnish
