Description

Have you always wanted to try oils, but didn’t know where to start? Do they intimidate you? Do you think they are too hard to clean up? Are you afraid of safety hazards or toxicity?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, this class is for YOU! I had oil paint for over a year and was too afraid to try it for all of these reasons and more! I didn’t know anything about how to use oil paint, the mediums, or how to clean up. I was afraid of hazardous chemicals and had been told by many that the clean-up process was awful.  I was also afraid that they would make my house smell. ALL of these concerns and misconceptions will be addressed in this class. When used properly, oils are less toxic than acrylics! I have spent more than a year researching everything I can about this medium, and I will teach you everything I have learned about painting with oils. This class is designed for beginners and also those who have painted in oils but want to learn more and take them further. I can’t wait for YOU to fall in love with them too!!!

MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE

I have heard so many concerns about oil paints that have prevented people from using them. Because of this, so many are missing out on what I find to be the most richest, and amazing art medium available!!! These concerns are based on old ways of using the medium. I want to teach you and show you just how far oil painting has come!!! You CAN paint with oils without the use of ANY solvents. You CAN use oil paint without worry of strong odors or fire hazards. You CAN clean up quickly and easily! Most importantly, you CAN learn to use them with confidence and translate them to YOUR style of painting.

This class is NOT about teaching you to paint in MY style. This class will equip you with the knowledge and tools to use oil paint to create YOUR OWN masterpieces in YOUR OWN style!! Let’s let go of the concerns and misconceptions and PAINT FEARLESSLY!!

LESSON 2 - SWATCHING

Lesson 2 will focus on spending the time to practice blending and swatching using a limited palette. We will discuss the importance of knowing the range of your paint and how to achieve the colors you want. You will be amazed at the extent of the range a limited palette can give you! You can create hundreds of colors from just three colors plus black and white!

LESSON 3 - OIL MEDIUMS

Next we will explore and experiment with the most commonly used oil mediums. I will tell you what each of them is for and what they do. In this lesson, we will also cover an important principle in oil painting called “fat over lean” and why this method is so important in oil painting. By the end of this lesson, you will have a clear understanding of what mediums are available to you and which ones best fit YOUR style.  Knowing this can save you lots of time and money.  It will also ensure your paintings will be beautiful for years to come.

LESSON 4 - PAINTING ON BLACK

LWWoman Crying

Finally it is time to paint!  In lesson 5, we will create a portrait on a black gessoed ground using the fat over lean principle.  This will also  ensure your painting will be archivally sound and last for many, many years. We will begin with a black substrate and also discuss how to transfer an image onto your substrate before painting. Lastly, we will work with some unconventional skin tones and play with color!!  This lesson is bound to be a ton of fun!

LESSON 5 - DRY BRUSH PORTRAIT

Let’s try something NEW! In this lesson we are going to use a very different technique that is perfect for beginners to oil painting. Using a dry brush technique students will see how forgiving oil paints are as well as add additional mediums to our work! This technique gives you great control over the paint application and is easily correctable. We will also bring in the addition of acrylic paint and charcoal. I will show you how to create your own beautiful portrait on an acrylic toned canvas and a charcoal sketch.

MEET LARISSA WEST - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR

larissawestbiopic

As a self-taught artist who found art late in life, Let's Face It has been an invaluable resource for me. I am deeply honored to be here teaching this year! Some of my fondest memories growing up were days spent creating and painting with my Mom. Neither of us had any formal training. It was all about the joy of creation. When she died, my passion for creating died too. In 2016, I made a personal vow to embrace the parts of me that had been neglected or put on hold. So, I began with a challenge to draw or paint something every day for thirty days and I fell in love all over again. I have been creating every day since then. I love all the aspects of the creative process and I enjoy working intuitively. I love experimenting with different mediums. I currently work with watercolors, acrylics and pastels, and oils but I love trying new mediums and techniques. I am so excited to be part of YOUR art journey!

Art expresses, art connects, art inspires, and art heals.

PRIVATE GROUP JUST FOR YOU!

This course will have a private Facebook group just for you!  I will be actively involved with the class via Facebook during the four weeks that the course is open!  I am really excited about working through these exercises with each of you!

  1. Libbi Corson (verified owner)

This class was a perfect introduction for me with oils. Larissa gives you a ton of information on oils and how to use them safely. I have fallen in love with using oils and this class is one of the main reasons. I can not recommend it enough!

  2. emma (verified owner)

This workshop is so very comprehensive and well set out, I thoroughly recommend it. Larissa has totally taken the mystery out of working with oils for me, they ARE easy to use and so very versatile too compared to acrylic paint. If you, like me, have bought oil paints and they are sitting in a box or drawer waiting for you to muster up the courage to use them then Larissa’s course is the one to banish your fear and help you every step of the way from which brushes to use, mediums and finally varnishing your work. All in all a very thorough course and very informative. Do it!

  3. Charlotte de Klerk (verified owner)

Although I have always used oils, I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the course and would certainly do a next course with Larissa!
