DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

LESSON 1 - ABSTRACT FLORALS IN GOUACHE

In our first main lesson, we get our creative juices flowing by working with gouache (or other water media) to start a couple of small paintings.  I will demonstrate two of these in my lesson.  I find it rather helpful to complete at least 3-6 small paintings at a time.  This is a great way for you to explore variety and to allow drying time while you work on others.

I will begin this lesson by sharing a quick demo of how I work on several at a time.  Then I move to a real time video of completing 2 warm up paintings using the same reference photo.  We will then take one of these smaller, warm ups to create a larger painting in Lesson 2.  This is also an excellent practice to use when creating a series of paintings!

LESSONS 2 AND 3 - ABSTRACT FLORALS IN OIL

In Lesson 2, we will be using a limited palette to practice tonal variation and color mixing skills. We will also be using this palette for part 2 of this lesson.  The most important lesson that you will learn from this lesson is that LESS IS MORE!  Meaning less color choices can really build color mixing skills.  You are welcome to use oil paints, or acrylic paints and glazing medium for this lesson.

In the second part of this lesson, I’m demonstrating how I paint a flower in oils, using the same reference photo from the previous lesson. You will learn to squint, push paint around, take risks and embrace your mistakes.  You will practice being loose and tight to bring variety to your artwork.  Most importantly, you will learn as you go!  Be open to the unknown!

I loved this course! I learned a lot about manipulating oil paint using mediums, getting and staying loose, being OK with staying loose, and how to work with a limited palette. I actually created a series of paintings using this technique and had a lot of fun doing it. Kasey also does some interesting figurative work, and I would really like to see a class of hers using this technique with figure painting. Overall, a great course that I would highly recommend.

  3. Bev Walker (verified owner)

This class is one of my absolute favorites! Kasey gives so many great tips (and tools!) for learning to loosen up in our work! The color shaper will become your favorite friend! I will be using what I’ve learned in everything I create from now on! Highly recommend!

  4. Denise Sedor (verified owner)

This class was amazing and I would recommend it for all levels. Kasey shares her techniques and painting style in a very easy to follow way. I just finished her class and have been able to easily transition her techniques into my own style which is always the goal!

  5. Chrissie England (verified owner)

This is a fabulous class for getting loose and expressive in your Flower creations. Kasey’s videos are thorough and easy to follow. Using her painting techniques with the color shaper and brayer are skills you’ll use over and over again. I highly recommend this class. And I’m hoping Kara brings Kasey back for some expressive figurative classes!

I haven’t finished the class yet, but the very first lesson in gouache was enough to make this class well worth taking. I’m looking forward to the demonstration in oils. I’m excited about this method and feel I can use it to loosen up my paintings of other subjects too. Thanks for this valuable class!

This class was so much fun . . . I did a series using this technique and sold several paintings. I particularly loved the color shaper techniques which I used with oil and cold wax. Highly recommend.
