In this course, we will begin with learning about the figure. I will show you several techniques and tools that I use to help guide me into creating an accurate, figure drawing. We will discover how to measure in a dynamic way that will help you to capture your figure rather quick, pointing to the most important elements. We will create several drawings that will then guide us in creating a larger painting. I will show you step-by-step how I create a large painting, with two figures, inspired by my own drawings. Come and join me on this refreshing journey!
DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS
LESSON 1 - CHARCOAL DRAWINGS
In lesson one, we will draw the figure, first with pencil, then with charcoal. You will learn/review how to measure proportions and direction of the movement. These are are the basic, but most important steps, into figure drawing and painting. You will learn about my favorite way of capturing the figure on paper.
Once You are comfortable with that technique, we will move on to loosening up with charcoal! The goal is, to put movement into your figure drawing.
For those of you, who are more fluent in figure drawing, please see this part as an addition of your repertoire.
LESSON 2 - FACE, HANDS, AND FEET
In this first part of our second lesson we will look more closely at the face. We will create a portrait in charcoal. We will begin with some activities to help warm us up before we get to the drawing. Watch as I show you how to feel your way through the drawing.
Part 2 of this lesson will focus on hands! Hands can show so much emotion and are a key component to expressive figures! Watch as I show you how I start a hand to help guide me into drawing them accurately. We will study pictures, shapes and lines to help you in future drawings.
The last part of this lesson will focus on the feet. Feet can also be such an important piece of a figure painting/drawing. I will show you a few pictures to help guide you with the feet, and teach you an easy approach to create feet that can become a beautiful addition to your figure work.
LESSON 3 - EXPRESSIONS
In lesson three, we will study emotions. These lessons will be in pencil and charcoal. We will take a deeper look into the features of the face, and emotions in hand posing and feet. I will share several different activities that you can use to practice each of these important parts of your figure work. We will learn several different tips and tricks to construct these important features. By understanding the guidelines in this lesson, you will have an easier time putting purpose and emotions into your figurative artwork. The better you understand these guidelines, the easier it will be for you to create figures in your own work without a model.
LESSONS 4-5 - PAINTING THE FIGURE
Lesson 4 will be the beginning of our final piece, THE PAINTING! I have broken this final piece into four separate lessons. In the first part, we will talk about acrylic colors. I will introduce my palette to you. You will discover many new guidelines on how to use acrylics, mediums, and how I mix them together. In this lesson ,we will begin our painting process in an abstract manner, creating an illusion. Learn to layer paints, which will slowly lead to working out our first figure with charcoal in the painting.
Next, in lesson 5, we will continue on in acrylics, giving the first figure more personality and character. We will layer in our paints more and more, and learn more about which medium I use and how I use it.
LESSON 6-7 - ADDING A SECOND FIGURE
Our final lessons will continue in the same mediums. We will begin to develop and complete a second figure in our background. By studying our abstract background, we will discover a new figure, and begin composing a scene. We will put together all that we have studied, and find the character of our figures in the painting. At this time, we will create an outfit, hairstyle, etc. to support their role in the painting! This is your chance to get creative and let your voice be heard.
Lesson 7 will move from illusion to narrative. We will finally complete the story and create a relationship between our two figures.

MEET CATHRINE EDLINGER-KUNZE - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR
Born and raised in Germany, Cathrine Edlinger-Kunze moved to the United States in 1994 where she works as a full time artist. She credits her father for inspiring her love for painting. "Sitting side by side with my father, I learned very early what painting meant to me, and it became a special bond to my father and me."
Cathrine devotes most of her time to sketching and painting the figure, explaining "the human face and body always fascinated ne... the body is the perfection of form, movement and nature." Much of the artist's recent subject matter revolves around performers and dancers, recalling the delicacy of Degas' ballerinas and the quietude of Picasso's saltimbanques.
Cathrine has shown her work since 1985 and has exhibited in Germany, Italy and the United States; and counts collectors from Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. She just returned from a one year stay in Sweden to her U.S. home in Albuquerque, NM

COURSE SUPPLIES
Below is a list of the supplies that I will be using for the projects in this course. However, you are always encouraged to use what you have on hand.
SURFACES:
Paper and Canvas:
- Any drawing/charcoal paper, white and colored (I’m using Strathmore 500 Series and Strathmore 400 Series, Pastel paper)
- Acrylic primed Canvas, Stretched or unstretched, any size that you are comfortable with, but 30x40 inch or larger, would be best.
- I used “Claessens” Universal (Acrylic) primed Belgium Linen Canvas roll, medium smooth texture, type 160, from www.utrecht.com, ~50x50 inch
DRAWING MATERIALS AND UTENSILS:
- HB pencil, any brand
- Vine Charcoal, any brand
- A piece of fat charcoal, any brand
- A Kneadable and a regular white eraser
- 1 white sock
- 2 tennis balls
- An art chamois or soft cotton rag
- sharpener
- White soft pastel stick
- (Optional: Nitram, Liquid charcoal)
PAINTING MATERIALS AND UTENSILS:
You do not need to purchase all of these colors. Use what you would normally use.
Acrylic Paints - My palette includes:
- Titanium White
- Unbleached Titanium
- Yellow Ochre
- Warm grey, (Sennelier)
- Raw Sienna
- Hansa Yellow, light
- Cadmium Orange
- Cadmium Red, medium
- Naphthol Crimson
- Cadmium Red extra deep
- Alysiam Crimson
- Iron Oxide (Sennelier)
- Burnt Umber
- Burnt Sienna
- Cerulean Blue
- Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue
- Mars Black
Brushes:
- #2, #4 and #6 soft brushes, any brand…
- A 2-inch bristle brush (inexpensive from Home Depot or such)
- A small detail brush
- A 2 -inch soft glazing brush

- Pallet knife

- Vine Charcoal
- 2-3 watercontainers

- “Golden” Glazing Medium, gloss
