In Expressive Bouquets, we will discover important concepts and principles to help you create successful paintings. These strategies will assist you as you plan out your overall design layouts, and they will also get you warmed up for creating bigger, larger pieces. DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS
EXERCISES 1-3
In exercises 1-3 we will focus on the concepts of: adding texture to our artwork, design, and light and dark. Before we begin painting, we learn some ways to prepare our surfaces to create texture and interest to our work. Once we have decided on the texture, we can move on to design.
In exercise two, we will explore a few principles of design; the placement of line, shape and space. I have selected six design compositions that I like to use when painting loose floral arrangements. Using the same substrate we already prepared, we will try out each design layout.
The use of strong contrasts between light and dark, can make your subject more three dimensional, and it can add drama to your work. In exercise three, we will experiment with this concept!
EXERCISES 4-6
Exercises 4-6 will focus on color. Color can be used to influence the mood of your work and a good color combination can really draw the viewer in. Over the years, I’ve taken art classes from some pretty awesome teachers where I learned a great deal about choosing and using colors together to make a painting sing. I have practiced many hours, goofing around and discovering my favorite combinations, and I am excited to show you how I do it.
The placement of color is another element of design composition, and one of my favorite parts of overall design. The first thing to really draw me into any painting is the color combination… it’s the bait that catches me, hook, line and sinker. The placement of color is very similar to the placement of shapes, lines and space that we saw in the design composition exercise. We will add our selected focal point color to the focal point area of our design composition, along with the helper colors to make our work really pop.
LESSONS 1-4
In our main lesson, we will create an expressive bouquet from start to finish using a reference photo. In this lesson, we will focus:
- on preparing our substrate
- design layout
- adding color
- self-assessment and final additions
Learn to complete an underpainting in my pieces to give subsequent layers a warm "glowy" feel! Move on to understanding how to add to a reference photo to create more interest and your own design. The reference photo is just that....used for "reference". Next we will begin adding more paint and the focal point. We will dance around the painting with our brush and intuitively slather the paint on where ever your gut instinct tells you to put it! Remember not to worry, it's just paint! You can always make changes. Finally we will reflect on our work. When is it time to stop? What do I love? What do I not love? Can you make some changes? We will discuss these questions as we complete our paintings!
REFLECTION LESSONS
This is a special little, "extra" lesson that I created for you! In this final application, we will have a chance to show all that we have learned about texture, design and composition, color, and how to salvage our paint so that we don't ever have to waste a drop!

MEET SHERRY WOODWARD - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR
Sherry is self-taught artist, and art teacher living in the San Francisco Bay Area, with her husband and their dog. She loves to paint almost daily and never runs out of inspiration.
Although she works full time as a commercial insurance broker, she is a prolific painter devoted to her craft. Her work can be described as impressionistic, expressive, and impactful.
Sherry loves to share her process with her students, and encourage them to find the joy in painting and not to worry about making mistakes.

- 12” x 12” x .5” Cradled birch board

This is a great course. It teaches you a lot about composition, tonal values, light and color use. I started painting more loosely (“hold your brush like a two year old”) and now I use the color wheel to build a more conscious palette. I always thought flowers were a bit boring to paint, but now I love it!
