DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

Before we get started on any drawing/painting exercises, I will share some important terminology with you on light, shadow and edge via video and printed PDF.  Next we will move into The Three "V's".  There are so many possibilities within the genre of still life that what to paint can sometimes be an overwhelming decision. We’ll break down my three main considerations for choosing and arranging still life objects.  Also included in this lesson is a royalty free picture pack to practice with!

Let's move into our main lessons!  First, we will create some thumbnail sketches.  It's a great way to plan your composition, and make a few important decisions before moving on to your canvas.  I will also share some simple “do’s and don’ts” of composition.  Next we will use pencil and sharpie marker - or the sketching medium of your choice - to create three small composition plans in different formats.

After that, we will complete a value study.  This is one of my favorite ways to plan a painting.  We have already worked out our design, and now we can focus on seeing color as value.  I’ll discuss the benefits of painting in black and white, and how to use this tool to take the decisions you made in the thumbnail one step further!

Let’s lay out our split-primary palette. This palette is still “limited” by many artists’ standards, and is a great way to simplify color mixing, and keep your mixtures fresh and harmonious.  If you’ve got a way of organizing the pigments on your palette that works for you, feel free to stick with that.

“Alla Prima” is an Italian phrase meaning “All at once.” The French call it “Premier Coup,” and in English we call it “Wet-On-Wet,” or “Direct” painting. It generally means that a small painting is begun and finished in one sitting, and it’s a really fun and freeing way to paint. I’ve broken my own all prima process down into three simple steps and you will learn all about this process in class!

Our final lesson is one of my favorite workshop exercises! Twisted 20’s takes the pressure off of still life setup, and helps us loosen up and let go of preciousness by making the timer our friend. It’s a great way to warm up for a long day in the studio, get back in the groove when we’ve been away for a while - or just don’t know what to paint!

Choose two or three simple objects (you want more than one object so the still life appears different once it’s been twisted) and a colored background.  We will begin by mixing colors specific to our still life.   In between each round of 20 minute paintings, we will do a “palette mix-down,” refining and tweaking our mixtures so that our colors get better and better as we proceed from one painting to the next. We will also twist or rotate the still life for a new view.

MEET SARAH SEDWICK - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR

SarahSedwickHeadshot2021

A prolific painter of still life and portraits, Sarah has been teaching workshops on alla prima painting around the country since 2013, and also offers an online art mentorship program.

Based in Eugene, Oregon since 2007, Sarah was born in Cleveland, Ohio.  In 2001, she earned a BFA from Maryland Institute, College of Art. Her oil paintings explore the simple beauty of everyday objects, and are most often inspired by color combinations and perceptual effects. All are painted from life.

Her teaching philosophy is simple: the more you paint, the more yoU improve - so find ways to make painting as enjoyable as possible! Let go of perfectionism, and watch the results unfold.

 PRIVATE GROUP JUST FOR YOU!

This course will have a private Facebook group just for you!  Teacher will be active during the first four weeks from the opening of class.  After that course will become a self-study.  Students sign up for classes all year long, and you can see past and present work and comments.
