Description

INTRODUCTION TO ALLA PRIMA PORTRAITS WITH A LIMITED PALETTE

The ability to see things simply and work with precision is essential for us as artists. Learning how to break down a portrait into manageable steps is a skill worth mastering and the ability to finish a study in a 3 hour period is exhilarating. This is what the practice of Alla Prima painting offers. Medici will provide frequent demos, breaking down the process into clear and consecutive steps, as well as critique and instruct each session.
We will focus on 4 main aspects of a portrait:
  • Proportion
  • Value
  • Color
  • Edge

Since simplicity is one of our goals, we will be using a limited palette of only 7 colors: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Quinacridone Red, Cadmium Red Light, Cobalt Teal, Ultramarine and Ivory Black.  This dynamic palette helps us understand color relationships. Practicing this way helps sharpen your observation  and takes your skill to a new level.
