I am so happy to announce that my very good friend, KJ Allison, will be teaching her very first "Birdie Love" workshop at my studio in November!  In this 2 1/2 day class, KJ will share some of her own sculptures with students.  She will walk students through the process of creating one of her birdie sculptures from start to finish – demonstrating design, building, sanding, and finally, painting her piece.  You do not want to miss this very special workshop!

Event Schedule:

Thursday, Day 1:

  • 8:45 – Arrive
  • 9:00 – 3:00
  • Creating should be fun and relaxed so we will begin our first day using colorful clay that does not dry out to practice our clay face building exercises. You will learn more than one way to create a face and you will choose the style that you like best for your birdie. We will then make a face with air dry clay that will dry overnight so that you will have it to practice painting on day two. Next we will build our bird armature after viewing some samples and discussing options. After lunch we will apply clay to the armature and we hope to complete this phase of the bird so that it will have time to dry for day three of our workshop.
  • We will break for lunch.  There are many wonderful eateries within walking distance.  Many students order to go, and bring back and continue working in the studio.
  • 3:00 – End

Friday, Day 2:

  • 8:45 – Arrive
  • 9:00 – 3:00
  • I will begin with a demo of sanding a bird and you will sand your prepared face. I will then demo how to paint a face on clay and you will have time to practice painting your face. We will take a look at how to create some adornments for birds such as spiked collars, little birdies, beanies and crowns. I will demo how to paint the entire bird body and face and if our birds have dried enough we will sand them for painting on Day three.
  • We will break for lunch.  There are many wonderful eateries within walking distance.  Many students order to go, and bring back and continue working in the studio.
  • 3:00 – End

Saturday, Day 3:

  • 8:45 – Arrive
  • 9:00 – 11:30
  • This day is devoted to painting our birds. I begin with a reminder demo and then you will work on your birdies until they are finished. I will then discuss how to fix breakages and make corrections, even after the bird has dried fully. Other than wire legs and the internal armature that is made of paper and sometimes foil, my birds are made completely out of air dry clay. You will learn that any bird can be made into a wonderful little creature that you will love! I hope to get all of us to the end of a creation because it is the way you will learn NOT to ever give up on a clay creation too early. Some of my ugliest in the beginning have been my most beloved critters in the end. I can’t wait to tell you all about them!
  • 12:00 - Wrap up and off to lunch if you are up for it!
