Are You Looking for a Fun and Relaxing Way of Creating Art?  Wouldn't it Be Fun if Your Art was Inspired By Your Own Experiences?

Join Holly Beals in her brand new course, ACRYLIC AND COLLAGE FIGURE PAINTING, where you will explore a unique, exciting way of creating figurative artwork! Learn how to develop a compelling composition by starting out with a photo and developing it into a conceptual sketch or “map”. Then carry out the vision with a fun combination of acrylic painting, paper collage techniques and incorporating elements of pattern. Although Holly will be painting the figures throughout this course, she also demonstrates a way to practice these techniques while using photographs of the figures instead. So, if you feel intimidated by drawing and painting the figure, Holly will settle your nerves!  Join Holly in creating three different painting projects, from sketch phase to completion. We hope to see you in class!

DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

We’ll start out with some background on one of Holly’s favorite topics...color! In Lesson 1, Holly will share her personal approach to color mixing. Get a behind the scenes glimpse at how to create the color palette of your dreams, for the entire year! Learn some of the benefits of working within a limited color palette and how efficient it can be to have a majority of your colors premixed each time you sit down to paint.  Lesson 2 is for those of you that feel intimidated by the figure.  In this lesson, Holly will demonstrate a technique she used until she felt comfortable and confident in her own drawing and painting skills.  This technique will not only help you gain confidence in figure painting, but will also give you practice time with the design and composition of your painting.

In lessons 3-5, we will complete three different figure paintings using a unique (and fun!) blend of acrylic painting and collage techniques. We’ll begin with the conceptual phase of a small, loose pencil sketch and take the project all the way to completion on wood panel. You’ll be amazed at the variety of possibilities and textures that can be achieved, even through the simple layering of paint over handmade papers applied to the surface. Bringing elements of pattern, texture and collage together in your figure paintings can make for some truly creative explorations!

Once we’ve completed our three painting projects, join Holly for a critique session in which she compares and contrasts two of her own finished paintings. Discuss the benefits of creating various works (in various sizes), based on similar subject matter, or by referencing the same photo for inspiration multiple times.

MEET HOLLY BEALS - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR

HollyBealsHeadShotrectangle

I’m convinced that everyone needs a little lively color and uplifting in their day to day. If I can get happily lost in the creative process and spread some joy around in the meantime...success!

After graduating from Chico State with a BA in communications, I worked as a graphic designer for six years. But new adventures were calling and I was blessed with the opportunity to teach conversational English to college students in Tibet. It was there, one day in my tiny apartment, where I gathered up what I had on hand: scrap paper, Mod Podge and acrylic paint. I was trying to make it through an emotionally challenging season and what emerged on canvas from that struggle was beautiful and satisfying. So began my love for mixed media painting.

Now, in the midst of yet another great adventure, being a mother to two young boys, I continue my love for mixed media painting and cherish time in the art studio. I mainly work with acrylics and handmade or scrap paper on wood panel. Texture, layering, unexpected color combinations and capturing the human form are all reoccurring curiosities.

Some things I’ll never stop believing: life has meaning, each person is significant, and The One who made all things is beautiful beyond comprehension. What a privilege it is to share my creative expressions with YOU.

 PRIVATE GROUP JUST FOR YOU!

This course will have a private Facebook group just for you!  This course is a self-study, so the teacher may or may not be active in the group.  However, students still sign up and you can see past and present work and comments.

COURSE SUPPLIES

I hope you can use supplies that you already have and not have to purchase any. Really you can do this with any medium and any tools so go ahead and try to use what is already in your artspace.

Substrates

  • Wood painting panels in your choice of size. There are many available brands, but I use Blick Premier panels (dickblick.com) with an extra deep profile in the 12x16 and 18x24 inch sizes for this course.
  • Watercolor paper for the planning and sketch phase. For this course, I use Fabriano 140 lb sheets in the 5x7 inch size for sketches.

Paints

  • Acrylic paints in a variety of warm and cool colors, and white (my favorites are Nova color and Golden)
  • Acrylic ink in Scarlet (I use Daler Rowney in the 6 oz. container)
  • For achieving dark shadows, I like to use a mix of Phthalo blue, Quinacridone Crimson and Scarlet acrylic ink
  • Brushes
  • Any preferred brushes or tools used for applying paint in a variety of sizes. I love the fine tip brushes for details, but my largest brush is a Simply Simmons XL flat.

Other

  • Collage materials (I especially like the older stuff you can dig up at consignment stores, like sheet music and other printing in black & white)
  • Handmade or embossed papers fore developing textured areas (dickblick.com has a nice selection of handmade papers)
  • Printed photos (feel free to print the photos provided in the lesson for reference or to use as collage)
  • Gel medium. I typically use Nova Color gloss medium for gluing and matte varnish as a seal. ModPodge is more affordable (and what I first started out with)
  • Painting palette (I use the Masterson Sta-Wet)
  • Drawing pencil (HB) and eraser for sketching
  • Hairdryer (for speeding up the paint drying process)
  • Small rubber kitchen spatula for mixing paint
  • Palette knife
  • High Flow Medium
  • Resealable containers for storing mixed paint colors

I absolutely loved this class, although it was way out of my comfort zone. I had a hard time painting abstract, but I would definitely take Holly’s classes again!
