DAY 10

COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS - DAY 10

Hello Friends!

Today is Day 10 of our Christmas Countdown!  Yesterday we offered a fun and quirky lesson with Kathy Lewis!

During Day 10, we are offering a fun lesson with me!  This is one of my favorite lessons because it is so freeing.  I think when you can't control the outcome of something, it truly feels good and gives us permission to play and go back to how we were early on in our art journey.  I hope you have fun with this and can't wait to see what you create with it!

This video, along with all coming days, will be only be available through December 25th!

Hugs!

WALKING HEAD

This week we have a new lesson with me, Kara Bullock (@karabullockart)!  I am so excited to share with you my mini lesson from LFI21!  For this lesson, I am sharing a piece that was inspired by two artists that I absolutely adore, Robert Kelley, and Paul Cristina!  I know that you are all familiar with Robert, but if you have not heard of Paul, please be sure to check out his work on Instagram (@paul_cristina).  Paul's earlier work from 2018 is very inspiring to me, especially works such as Until Nothing Comes and Modern Lovers, as seen below.  I would love to take the portraits created from this lesson and create something more with them, possibly for a later lesson....we will see.

SUPPLIES

I will be using the following materials, but we always recommend that you use what you have.  There is no PDF this week.

  • Black and white china marker
  • Acrylic inks; black, white, turquoise, orange, van dyke brown, transparent raw sienna, light sky blue and quin rose pink.
  • Pastels; bright pink, coral, orange-coral-reddish color pastel please feel free to use what calls to you <3 always!
  • Matte medium (luiqitex) any brand is great, if you want to adhere your paper to the hardboard. Please know any substrate works and feel free to substitute anything else!
  • I added some craft croc chalk markers just to use them ha, I had cleaned out a space and found them. Why not right? 🙂 pink, yellow, blue and red.

FYI if you decide to adhere paper down, you may want to seal with fixative first or try not to get Matte medium on top of face. It may smear some, although that is also fun.

Hello Friends!

Today is Day 9 of our Christmas Countdown!  Yesterday we offered a freebie with Kasey Moran!  Her classes have definitely been popular in our community!

During Day 9, we are offering a quirky lesson with Kathy Lewis!  It just wouldn't be the same if we didn't offer a free lesson with Kathy!  Kathy's artwork brings so much joy and laughter to people's lives and I am just so grateful to have her as a main teacher in our community!  If you have never taken a class with Kathy, I promise you will learn A LOT and HAVE FUN!

This video, along with all coming days, will be only be available through December 25th!

LIFE IN LAYERS with CE DUFF

This lesson introduces more variations and ways to expand on the use of collage in a small portrait painting. We add paint to one of our teabag faces from the second warmup, and integrate her into a collaged background on a small 4”x4” board. We then work intuitively to build up translucent layers around our teabag character. This lesson also focuses on the challenge of painting a small face with small brushes.

Students will be introduced to the following objectives:

  • Paint a small scale portrait
  • Building a character through layering collage and paint
  • Gain an understanding of creating depth with translucent layers of collage

SUPPLIES

Below is a list of the supplies that I will be using for the projects in this course.  However, you are always encouraged to use what you have on hand.

  • 4”x4” cradled wood board, sealed and primed (if necessary)
  • Lightweight collage papers: e.g. napkins, Japanese fibre papers (rice, mulberry, unryushi), sewing pattern tissue, inkblot tissue (created in warmup 1), doily, collage words
  • Matte medium and brush
  • Teabag portrait from Warmup2
  • Acrylic Paint:
    • Liquitex Soft Body: Burnt Umber, Dioxanine Purple, Yellow Oxide, Parchment
    • Golden Fluid: Red Oxide, Transparent Red Iron Oxide;
      Titanium White
  • Liquitex Acrylic Ink - Transparent Burnt Sienna, Muted Violet
  • Water mister
  • Golden Soft Gel Semi Gloss
  • Small brushes

FIGURES AND COLLAGE with HOLLY BEALS

In the main lessons, we will complete three different figure paintings using a unique (and fun!) blend of acrylic painting and collage techniques. We’ll begin with the conceptual phase of a small, loose pencil sketch and take the project all the way to completion on wood panel. You’ll be amazed at the variety of possibilities and textures that can be achieved, even through the simple layering of paint over handmade papers applied to the surface. Bringing elements of pattern, texture and collage together in your figure paintings can make for some truly creative explorations!  Let's begin our first lesson!

Students will be introduced to the following objectives:

  • Complete a figure painting inspired by an experience
  • Begin with the conceptual phase of a small, loose pencil sketch
  • Discover new ways to create texture and interest
  • Experiment with elements of pattern, texture and collage

SUPPLIES

Below is a list of the supplies that I will be using for the projects in this course.  However, you are always encouraged to use what you have on hand.

Substrates

  • Wood painting panels in your choice of size. There are many available brands, but I use Blick Premier panels (dickblick.com) with an extra deep profile in the 12x16 and 18x24 inch sizes for this course.
  • Watercolor paper for the planning and sketch phase. For this course, I use Fabriano 140 lb sheets in the 5x7 inch size for sketches.

Paints

  • Acrylic paints in a variety of warm and cool colors, and white (my favorites are Nova color and Golden)
  • Acrylic ink in Scarlet (I use Daler Rowney in the 6 oz. container)
  • For achieving dark shadows, I like to use a mix of Phthalo blue, Quinacridone Crimson and Scarlet acrylic ink
  • Brushes
  • Any preferred brushes or tools used for applying paint in a variety of sizes. I love the fine tip brushes for details, but my largest brush is a Simply Simmons XL flat.

Other

  • Collage materials (I especially like the older stuff you can dig up at consignment stores, like sheet music and other printing in black & white)
  • Handmade or embossed papers fore developing textured areas (dickblick.com has a nice selection of handmade papers)
  • Printed photos (feel free to print the photos provided in the lesson for reference or to use as collage)
  • Gel medium. I typically use Nova Color gloss medium for gluing and matte varnish as a seal. ModPodge is more affordable (and what I first started out with)
  • Painting palette (I use the Masterson Sta-Wet)
  • Drawing pencil (HB) and eraser for sketching
  • Hairdryer (for speeding up the paint drying process)
  • Small rubber kitchen spatula for mixing paint
  • Palette knife
  • High Flow Medium
  • Resealable containers for storing mixed paint colors

THUMBNAIL SKETCHES WITH SARAH SEDWICK

Thumbnail sketches are a great way to plan your composition, and make a few important decisions before moving on to your canvas.

We’ll use a viewfinder to visually frame our setup, considering cropping, focal point, and big value shapes - and going over a few simple “do’s and don’ts”  of composition.

Using pencil and sharpie marker - or the sketching medium of your choice - you’ll create three small composition plans in different formats, and discuss how to choose the one that appeals to you most - and that will create the most successful painting!

Students will be introduced to the following:

  • The purpose and process of making thumbnail sketches
  • Sarah's technique of quick sketching with pencil and sharpie marker
  • Using cropping and big value shapes to create interesting negative spaces
  • How the "Rule of Thirds" helps determine a focal point in your composition
  • Reviewing the "Composition Checklist" to catch any potential issues before moving on to your painting
