FINALLY…. A VICTORY!!!!

GET ME OUT OF THIS FUNK!

Hey there wonderful peeps!  I can’t seem to get on here enough to share about what is happening in my life at the moment.  Between teaching college, creating art, putting together workshops for all of you, and being a wife and mom, I am swamped with a million “to dos”!  In the midst of all of this, I started to feel like I had lost my way.  Time and time again, I would sit down at my easel, or at my art table, and start creating what felt like something awesome, only to turn out as a let down to myself.  Scrap that one!  Next!  These feelings are such a let down and make me start to wonder if I am good enough to do what I am doing…..what I want to do…..what I feel like I am supposed to be doing.  Then I tell myself to stop listening to those feelings of doubt and carry on.  I AM MEANT TO DO THIS!!!!

As I was talking to my sister about all of these feelings, it finally dawned on me that I am in a growing phase.  I really hate these phases, but they are necessary to grow as an artist, if I want to move forward.  I have never been one to do the same thing over and over again.  I get bored.  I want to learn.  I want to try new things.  I want to challenge myself.  Well, along with all of this comes frustration and feelings of doubt.  However, if I can push through the hard part, I know that I will end up in a good place.  So, I am in a funky phase, and I am trying to look forward to what will come from the learning and growth that is currently taking place.  The worst part is, I can envision what I want, but I can’t always achieve that outcome.  I have to tell myself that it is okay.  In time, I will get there…..RIGHT!?  I think it depends on my attitude and what I tell myself.  So, I WILL GET THERE!

I have been taking different classes to help push my skills, to gain new knowledge, and to find out what more I can add to my art to make it more meaningful to me.  I take what I learn, and apply it to what I already know.  You would think something amazing would come out of that, but in the beginning, all that comes through is disappointment.  So, as I am disappointed, I will put an unfinished piece to the side.  But then, what begins to happen is I see things fall into place.  Hey, it worked!  I applied a new strategy and it looks the way that I envisioned!  BRAVO, YOU!  FINALLY, A VICTORY!

Once I score the goal, I will then go back to some of those that were thrown to the side and spend some time with them.  What can I do to make these work?  Sometimes I will paint over the entire thing, but most of the time, I try to just make a few minor changes and add details and new ideas to make them turn into something that I can live with, and even be somewhat proud of.  Here are a few my recent pieces.  The victory for me in the last week was “The Visitor” which is the painting below with the raven headdress.

My advice to each of you is to keep growing and learning, even through the frustration.  Don’t give up!  You were meant to be here and to do this!  Art on!!!

I think your sister’s take on your funk is very incisive. I’m glad you are now reaping the dividends of your creative growth.

There must be something in the air inspiring us to paint women with Ravens on their heads as I painted one in an altered book recently (here https://pictink.wordpress.com/2015/11/06/altered-book-of-monsters-20-raven-woman/ if you want to have a squizz). I love the way you’ve captured the glossiness of the feathers in this piece and the woman’s expression is both serene and powerful.

      Julia,
It’s tough, but I think that we have to share so that we can push forward and encourage others to do the same! Thank you for your encouragement, too!! xo
